A24’s ‘Backrooms’ Extended Cut Release Date and Where to Watch
A24 is giving horror enthusiasts another reason to revisit the eerie realm of ‘Backrooms’. The unexpected box office sensation is returning to theaters with an extended version that features additional footage and a special post-credit scene.
According to a listing on AMC’s website, the new release is titled ‘Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition’. This updated version will include 15 minutes of extra material from director Kane Parsons and will be shown exclusively in theaters. The extended cut will have a total runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes and is set to arrive on July 3, just in time for the busy July 4 holiday weekend.
This move follows ‘Backrooms’ becoming one of A24’s biggest success stories. The horror film was produced with a budget of around $10 million but has grossed over $330 million worldwide. This achievement has turned the movie into one of the most profitable releases of the year, marking a significant milestone for both the studio and its young filmmaker.
Parsons’ rise has been one of the most remarkable aspects of the film’s success. Before directing the movie, the 20-year-old filmmaker garnered a substantial online following through his ‘Backrooms’-inspired videos on YouTube. His internet presence caught Hollywood’s eye, leading to the feature film adaptation that became a major theatrical hit.
The film follows a furniture store owner, portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who stumbles upon a mysterious and endless collection of bizarre spaces hidden beneath the store. As he delves into these unsettling locations, he finds himself trapped in a world that seems impossible to escape. The cast also features Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.
With the extended edition, A24 aims to entice audiences back for another journey into the unsettling world crafted by Parsons. The studio is leveraging the holiday weekend to attract both fans who have already seen the movie and those who may have missed it during its initial theatrical run.
‘Backrooms’ is also making its return during a competitive box office period. The re-release will share screens with major summer films, including Disney and Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’ and Universal and Illumination’s ‘Minions & Monsters’. Despite this competition, A24 seems confident that the film’s strong fanbase will help the extended version find its audience.
The success of ‘Backrooms’ continues a recent trend of smaller horror films achieving major hits. Another example is ‘Obsession’, a low-budget horror film from Focus directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, who also gained recognition through YouTube. That film reportedly earned over $370 million globally despite costing only about $750,000 to produce.
Both films illustrate how horror has become a thriving space for young filmmakers with innovative ideas and supportive online communities. ‘Backrooms’, in particular, has demonstrated that a project that begins on the internet can evolve into a significant theatrical event.
A24 has yet to release an official statement regarding the extended version, but the AMC listing confirms that fans will soon have another opportunity to experience Parsons’ disturbing and mysterious world on the big screen.
