‘The Devil’s Mouth’ Trailer Reveals a Chilling Cave Survival Story Starring Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor
‘The Devil’s Mouth’ presents a chilling twist on the classic post-graduation trip narrative, transforming a dream getaway in Thailand into a harrowing struggle for survival. This upcoming Prime Video thriller features Kathryn Newton, Lana Condor, Nico Hiraga, Gavin Casalegno, Tommi Rose, and Tayme Thapthimthong as a group of friends ensnared in a perilous cave system, where a deadly predator lurks in the water.
The first trailer for the film has just dropped, offering a glimpse into the terrifying ordeal these friends endure. What begins as a relaxing final adventure before adulthood quickly devolves into a nightmare as they find themselves trapped underground, with limited options and a hungry bull shark stalking them.
The story centers on Sara, portrayed by Kathryn Newton, and her best friend Max, played by Lana Condor, as they navigate both the external threats and the internal conflicts within their friendship. While the shark and the cave present immediate dangers, the narrative also explores how fear can alter relationships when individuals are pushed to their limits.
Newton expressed that Sara’s personal journey was a key reason for her enthusiasm about the role. “My character, Sara, is going through something relatable with her best friend Max played by Lana Condor. Sara wants to carve her own path and assert independence but doesn’t want to lose her best friend in the process,” she shared.
She added that the survival elements heightened the intensity of the story. “It was an exciting script from start to finish. I couldn’t wait to attack such a complex story heightened by the life and death stakes the shark and cave brought to what Sara was going through. It was insane!”
Condor also shared her thoughts on collaborating with the cast, praising the dynamic among the group. She enjoys ensemble projects for the way they allow various personalities and relationships to develop organically. “I love ensemble casts. I think they’re so much fun, and I always love when everyone has very specific character dynamics,” Condor noted.
For director Jeff Wadlow, the appeal of ‘The Devil’s Mouth’ lies not only in the survival aspect but also in the character transformations under pressure. He emphasized that the friendships are the core focus of the narrative.
“The shark and the cave create the nightmare, but the most interesting part for me was watching how these relationships evolved under that kind of unimaginable pressure,” Wadlow explained. He added that the friendships in the script were already layered before the extreme survival scenario was introduced.
Filming posed significant physical challenges for the cast, as much of the movie unfolds underwater and within caves, requiring the actors to tackle demanding scenes in tough conditions.
Wadlow commended the cast’s commitment during production. “The cast are in the water for most of the movie. They’re cold, constantly fighting the environment while trying to perform for the camera. What Kathryn, Lana, Nico, Gavin, Tommi, and Tayme brought to this film is extraordinary,” he remarked.
Newton also shared that the production pushed her beyond her comfort zone. The cast trained for underwater scenes and even obtained diving certifications for the film.
“We were really in the ocean and out in nature! Kayaking into caves, diving, and swimming. Every day on this film felt like magic,” Newton reflected.
‘The Devil’s Mouth’ is set to premiere on Prime Video on July 29, blending friendship drama, survival horror, and a terrifying underwater menace. The trailer hints that escaping the cave may not be the only obstacle these friends must face.
