Harlan Coben Reveals the Shocking Twist in Netflix’s ‘I Will Find You’
Harlan Coben is renowned for crafting mystery narratives filled with unexpected twists, and his latest thriller, ‘I Will Find You,’ adheres to this tradition. The Netflix series is brimming with secrets, concealed identities, and unforeseen developments, but one particular twist transformed the viewing experience for audiences.
In a video released by Netflix, Coben discussed the most significant surprise in the plot and shared insights on why this reveal resonated so effectively. He noted that a compelling twist arises from setting up expectations and then completely altering what the audience anticipates.
“I Will Find You hopefully, has a few big twists and turns at the end. What makes a good twist, of course, is you play with expectations,” Coben remarked.
The most shocking revelation centers on Hayden, portrayed by Milo Ventimiglia. Throughout the series, viewers are led to believe that Hayden is aiding the protagonist, but the reality is far more sinister. Coben clarified that Hayden was, in fact, the mastermind behind the entire scheme.

“The biggest one is that Hayden, played by Milo Ventimiglia, is the bad guy behind it all. He had his reasons, and I hope you kind of understand them,” Coben elaborated.
He also commended Ventimiglia’s performance, stating that the actor’s popularity enhanced the impact of the twist. Known for roles where he is often perceived as a trustworthy character, Ventimiglia successfully surprised viewers by subverting expectations.
“Everybody loves Milo Ventimiglia. And so to play against that type and to work it and to have him be seemingly part of the team, and then at the very end to be able to pull that rug from under your feet,” Coben noted.
The narrative follows David Burroughs, a man serving a life sentence after being wrongfully accused of murdering his young son, Matthew. David believes his child was killed years ago, but everything shifts when he uncovers a photograph suggesting that Matthew is still alive.
From this point, the mystery begins to unfold. The first major revelation is that the child David thought he lost was never actually Matthew. The body was that of an unrelated child brought into the scenario as part of a meticulously orchestrated setup. This victim was an orphan from Switzerland who resembled Matthew in age and appearance, allowing the conspirators to fabricate a false narrative.
The scheme also involved falsified evidence and manipulated records, making it seem as though David was responsible for his son’s death. With wealth and influence, those involved managed to deceive authorities and ruin David’s life.
The mastermind behind the entire plot was Hayden Payne, a wealthy individual whose obsession with Rachel, David’s sister-in-law, drove him to enact this extreme plan. Hayden believed Matthew was his biological son due to a secret linked to a fertility clinic. After discovering Rachel’s name associated with the clinic, he manipulated the circumstances and convinced himself of a connection to the child.
However, Coben reserved one last surprise for the conclusion. The truth is that Matthew was indeed David’s biological son all along. Hayden’s entire scheme was based on a false assumption, leading him to ruin multiple lives for a child who was never his.
For Coben, the effectiveness of the twist stemmed from meticulous storytelling and strong performances. He credited Milo Ventimiglia and the writing team for making Hayden’s transformation both believable and impactful.
“That I credit Milo Ventimiglia and the writer for being able to pull that off in the end,” Coben concluded.
With ‘I Will Find You,’ Coben once again delivers a mystery that keeps viewers guessing until the very last moment, solidifying his status as one of the leading figures in contemporary thriller storytelling.
