Marvel Animation’s highly anticipated revival made its return this week, carrying significant expectations. Season 1 emerged as one of Disney+’s standout series, and its finale left the X-Men scattered across various points in time after a catastrophic attack. Thus, the follow-up needed to demonstrate its ability to seamlessly continue the story.

The challenge intensified when it was revealed that the show’s original showrunner had departed prior to Season 2, with head writer Matthew Chauncey stepping in to steer the narrative. Given the first season’s acclaim for its political themes and character development, fan expectations were understandably mixed as they approached the three-episode premiere.

Based on the initial three episodes, the series largely meets the challenge, addressing much of its time travel setup while still delivering the mutant drama that fans crave. The premiere kicks off with “Days of Past Future,” where Forge and Bishop embark on an ambitious mission to rescue the X-Men, who were scattered across different historical timelines during the previous season’s finale.

One segment of the team, consisting of Professor Xavier, Magneto, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler, finds themselves in Ancient Egypt around 3,000 B.C., where they encounter a figure named En Sabah Nur. This name will resonate with longtime fans, as En Sabah Nur is destined to become the villain Apocalypse, and the show is clearly setting up its own interpretation of the classic Rise of Apocalypse comic storyline.

By the conclusion of “Rise of Apocalypse Part 1,” the rescue mission takes a complicated turn. Xavier and Magneto strive to prevent En Sabah Nur from becoming the tyrant he is fated to be, only to have their efforts disrupted by the arrival of Rama-Tut, a Pharaoh with significant connections to the time-traveling villain Kang the Conqueror in the comics.

In the present timeline, the second episode, titled “A Force to Be Reckoned With,” showcases two contrasting responses to the X-Men’s disappearance. Cable forms a new team called X-Force, enlisting Sunspot and Jubilee to join forces with Psylocke and Archangel, while Cyclops’ brother Havok leads a government-sanctioned unit known as X-Factor.

The tension between these two factions mirrors the philosophical divide that has always existed between Xavier and Magneto, now playing out among a younger generation of mutants forced to fill the void left behind. This clever narrative choice keeps the show’s signature ideological conflict alive, even as its main characters remain scattered across time.

Meanwhile, Cyclops and Jean Grey find themselves in a distant, dystopian future where they encounter a mysterious robed figure and a society shaped by Apocalypse’s ideology. Their storyline has been highlighted as containing some of the premiere’s most emotionally impactful moments, adding a personal stake to a season otherwise focused on grand historical narratives.

The fates of Wolverine, Storm, and Morph remain intentionally unexplored in these first three episodes, leaving a mystery that Season 2 has opted not to resolve immediately. This deliberate pacing suggests that the show aims to keep viewers guessing throughout the season rather than tying up every loose end right away.

Unlike Season 1’s ten-episode run, this new season consists of nine episodes spread over seven weeks, concluding with a finale on August 12. Following the three-episode premiere, the story will continue directly into “Rise of Apocalypse Part II” on July 8, promising to address the fractured alliance between the X-Men and En Sabah Nur as Rama-Tut’s ambitions escalate.

With Apocalypse’s origin story actively unfolding in the past, new factions emerging in the present, and Cyclops and Jean navigating a terrifying future, the season has set an ambitious stage in its opening hours. Whether all these threads will pay off remains to be seen, but the premiere has clearly reestablished the show’s bold storytelling approach.
