Disney Moves Forward with ‘Moana 3’ in Early Development at Disney Animation
The adventure of Moana is set to continue as Disney embarks on the early development of ‘Moana 3’ at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
This news follows the tremendous success of ‘Moana 2’, which surpassed the billion-dollar mark globally. The original 2016 film remains a favorite on Disney+, consistently ranking among the most viewed titles on the platform.
Screenwriters Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller have been confirmed for the upcoming project, indicating that Disney is committed to maintaining the quality and emotional depth that resonated with audiences in the previous films.
Dwayne Johnson, who voices Maui, recently confirmed that work on the next installment is already in progress. While specifics remain under wraps, his remarks affirm that Disney is actively developing the franchise rather than putting it on hold after the sequel.
Additionally, Disney is broadening the ‘Moana’ universe with a live-action adaptation of the original film, set to premiere soon. Johnson will reprise his role as Maui, while Catherine Laga’aia will portray Moana. This live-action version is scheduled for release on July 10, ensuring the franchise stays in the limelight ahead of the animated sequel.
While casting details for ‘Moana 3’ have yet to be announced, there is a strong expectation that Auliʻi Cravalho may return as Moana alongside Johnson. However, official confirmations are still pending, as Disney typically keeps casting decisions confidential until later in the process.
The timeline for ‘Moana 3’ remains uncertain. Disney Animation typically requires several years to finalize a feature, and sequels often take time to develop. If progress continues steadily, audiences might not see ‘Moana 3’ until the latter part of the decade.
Director David Derrick Jr., who contributed to ‘Moana 2’, has hinted at potential storylines, referencing Moana’s evolution into a demigod and suggesting there is still “untapped potential” in her narrative. The post-credits scene from the second film also teased future conflicts, indicating the possible return of Matangi and Nalo as significant threats.
While Disney has yet to disclose official plot details or a release date, the combination of strong box office results, ongoing franchise expansion, and early creative efforts indicates that Moana’s journey is far from over. Fans may need to be patient, but the oceanic adventure is clearly set to continue.
