Tom Holland Discusses Tobey and Andrew’s Influence in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Tom Holland has shared the story behind Peter Parker’s new suit in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ revealing that the design pays homage to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s iconic costumes. In a behind-the-scenes clip released by Sony Pictures, Holland explained that this version of Peter Parker has met both previous Spider-Men, which inspired the tribute.
In the promotional video, Holland elaborated on the creative team’s thought process, stating, “What if we made a suit that was an homage to Tobey’s and Andrew’s designs, because now my Peter Parker has met those guys?” He mentioned that they aimed to create a “spider child of all three costumes,” reflecting the character’s roots as a resourceful kid who repurposes old tech.
Holland was heavily involved in the suit’s development for ‘Brand New Day,’ taking inspiration from fan-favorite details of Maguire and Garfield’s suits. This included lowering the belt to create the illusion of a longer torso and adjusting the boots for a sleeker look. Costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays, who previously worked on ‘No Way Home,’ returned for this project.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton has also commented on the suit’s visual storytelling. He emphasized that the design allows viewers to see “the human beneath the material,” showcasing the costume’s folds and wrinkles, which contrasts with the more armored appearance of Peter’s earlier MCU looks.
This costume change is closely tied to Peter’s journey since ‘No Way Home.’ In an interview with Complex, Holland expressed his appreciation for the idea that Peter aims to emulate his older counterparts, noting the small details in their suits that he finds appealing. After experiencing significant loss, including his identity and loved ones, Peter’s incorporation of these influences into his new life adds emotional depth to the design.
The film also extends this tribute beyond aesthetics, as Peter gains the ability to generate organic webs from his wrists, reminiscent of Maguire’s portrayal in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy. This new power connects to the film’s overarching narrative about Peter’s abilities evolving in potentially perilous ways.
The suit has quickly become a focal point in the film’s marketing, with fans responding enthusiastically to the raised webbing inspired by Maguire’s suit and the streamlined silhouette that nods to Garfield’s. The film’s first trailer broke records, amassing 718.6 million views in just 24 hours, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Deadpool and Wolverine.’
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set to hit theaters on July 31, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. In a franchise that has always celebrated its suits, this one carries more narrative significance than any before it.
