In the Season 1 finale of ‘Dutton Ranch,’ titled “El Padrino,” nearly every character faced intense challenges, but Everett McKinney, portrayed by Ed Harris, emerged unscathed. In a surprising twist, he became an unlikely action hero during the episode’s climactic moments. With Everett’s assistance, Rip and his ranch hands successfully defended the ranch against Mariano’s men in a gripping shootout.

One recap even dubbed Everett the “MVP” of the shootout, highlighting the irony that he had just learned he would be taking lives that very night. As a Vietnam War Navy veteran, this sequence added a new layer to his character, moving beyond his usual role of caring for sick cattle and grappling with past traumas.

While Everett managed to survive, the finale was not without significant loss. The episode concluded with violence and tragedy, and many anticipated that Rip would be responsible for Rob-Will’s demise, played by Jai Courtney. Instead, the fatality came from within the Jackson family.

In the finale, viewers discover that Beulah’s 10 Petal Ranch has been involved in smuggling drugs inside cattle from Mexico for at least fifteen years, a deal she made to escape financial difficulties. It is later revealed that Mariano holds significant leverage over Beulah due to her past, having killed her rapist, who was also Rob Will’s biological father, when she was very young.

Rob-Will meets his end at the hands of Kino, who delivers a final line about how the ranch “eats what it loves and keeps the bones” before his character is killed off.

Everett’s survival is particularly impactful given the emotional foundation established earlier in the season. Episode 4 revealed that he has been concealing the pain of losing his son, Levi, a tragedy he confided to Beulah during a heartfelt conversation. This backstory has made Everett one of the show’s most quietly heartbreaking characters, contributing to the audience’s attachment to him.

In a poignant moment during the finale, Beth asks Everett if he ever feels like the world will open up and consume everything he loves while they clean blood off the patio. This small exchange underscores how deeply Everett has become intertwined with the Dutton family, despite being an outsider in their chaotic world.

The finale also revealed that Beulah shared her past with Everett, including the traumatic story of Rob-Will’s conception, and disclosed her connections to fentanyl smuggling involving Joaquin’s father, Mariano. This confession places Everett in a complex emotional situation as he heads into Season 2, now fully aware of the family he has aligned himself with.

Looking ahead to Season 2 of ‘Dutton Ranch,’ fans of Ed Harris can take comfort in the fact that Everett is not only surviving but is also set to play a more significant role in the story. Reilly and Hauser informed TV Insider that Season 2 will showcase much more of Harris, with Beth, Rip, Beulah, and Everett all sharing equal importance as they collaborate to protect Beth and Rip’s son.

Reilly even suggested that Season 2 will feel much more like Ed’s show, noting that ‘Dutton Ranch’ now features four or five lead characters, and that the presence of Annette Bening and Ed Harris has elevated the series beyond a mere “soapy spinoff.” This is a tremendous endorsement for a character who began the season as a reserved small-town veterinarian.

Currently, Season 2 is in preproduction under new showrunner Benjamin Cavell, with a release anticipated sometime in 2027 or possibly 2028. Regardless of the timeline, Everett’s expanded role means that his grief over Levi, his relationship with Beulah, and his newfound readiness to fight for the Duttons will all become increasingly significant as the story unfolds.

So, while Everett McKinney is safe for now, with a cartel out for vengeance and Carter still missing, do you think his memories of Levi will lead to even more heartbreak in Season 2?
