‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Projected for Over $550 Million Opening Weekend
The tracking numbers for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ have now surpassed the point where discussions about superhero fatigue seem relevant.
As noted by Lets Cinema, the Tom Holland sequel is expected to earn over $550 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This impressive figure is even more astonishing considering it does not include any domestic IMAX screens, which are fully booked for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ until August 14.
Historically, IMAX has provided a significant boost to superhero film openings, often accounting for a large share of early ticket sales. For ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to be tracking at this level without access to those screens domestically is, as Lets Cinema put it, a bold statement. The film will still be available in ScreenX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, and other premium formats, but the lack of IMAX screens is a notable competitive disadvantage that the tracking numbers seem to be absorbing.
The presale data supporting this projection is already impressive. According to Deadline, the film achieved the best first-day U.S. ticket presales of any movie in five years, a record only matched by ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which set the stage for its own $260.1 million domestic and $600.5 million global opening weekend. The last time presale tracking indicated this level of demand, it became one of the most remarkable stories of the pandemic era.
Industry analysts are drawing comparisons to ‘No Way Home,’ which had its massive opening in December 2021 amid a still-recovering theatrical landscape. ‘Brand New Day’ is set to debut during a highly competitive summer season, against a release schedule that has already seen multiple blockbuster openings this year, yet it is still projected to match or exceed that December performance.
Sony confirmed that the first trailer became the most-viewed trailer in history, amassing 718.6 million views within its first 24 hours, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Deadpool and Wolverine.’ The second trailer, released in June, garnered 590.8 million views in its first week, marking the second-highest trailer debut ever recorded by WaveMetrix. The marketing campaign has been running at a frequency and cultural saturation that aligns with a film the studio believes can approach its predecessor’s totals.
Domestic presales have now exceeded $40 million, with some projections estimating a domestic opening between $228 million and $260 million, alongside international figures that could push the global opening well past the $550 million mark, potentially positioning it among the largest first weekends in superhero film history.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set to hit theaters on July 31, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with Amazon Prime member early screenings beginning on July 29. For a franchise achieving this level of success without even utilizing IMAX screens, the potential once those screens become available later in the run is an intriguing topic for discussion.
