Angel Studios has achieved another success with ‘Young Washington,’ the historical drama that explores the early life of America’s first president. The film has garnered an impressive A CinemaScore from audiences on its opening day, perfectly timed for the Independence Day weekend. This reinforces the studio’s effective model of faith-based, crowd-pleasing cinema that consistently resonates with viewers.

Directed by Jon Erwin and released on July 3, the film chronicles the journey of a young George Washington, starting from the death of his father to his pivotal experiences during the French and Indian War. William Franklyn-Miller plays the lead role, supported by a talented cast including Mary-Louise Parker, Kelsey Grammer, Andy Serkis, and Ben Kingsley.

The narrative follows Washington, a colonial surveyor who was denied a formal commission in the British Army, as he becomes a central figure in a global conflict that shapes him into the leader known today.

The film premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 13 before its wide release. In the U.S. and Canada, it was projected to earn around $15 million during its opening weekend, a reasonable target for an independently distributed historical film competing against ‘Minions and Monsters’ and ‘Toy Story 5,’ which continue to attract family audiences.

The A CinemaScore will be a key focus for Angel Studios as they head into the weekend’s subsequent days. While critics have shown mixed feelings, with a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 36 reviews, the disparity between critic reviews and audience reactions is a gap Angel Studios has successfully bridged before, as seen with ‘Sound of Freedom’ and ‘His Only Son.’

Erwin, known for directing ‘Jesus Revolution’ and ‘American Underdog,’ has established himself as a reliable figure in faith-based and patriotic cinema over recent years. The film is rated PG-13 due to intense war violence and some graphic imagery, indicating that Erwin aimed for historical authenticity while maintaining an inspirational tone.

The release timing is strategic, with Fandango offering a $5 ticket promotion using the code AMERICA250 for Fourth of July screenings. This directly connects the film’s launch to the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations, reinforcing the event-style marketing that Angel Studios has successfully implemented with previous releases. This grassroots promotional approach, combined with a strong audience score, is the formula the studio has used to exceed modest expectations in the past.

The true test for ‘Young Washington’ will come in its second weekend. Historically, Angel Studios films have benefitted from strong attendance from church groups and community screenings in the days following their opening weekend, often resulting in significantly smaller drops than the industry average and pushing final domestic totals well beyond initial projections.
