The anticipation for ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping‘ has intensified with the first official glimpse of the new Haymitch and Effie Trinket. Lionsgate has released fresh footage showcasing Joseph Zada and Elle Fanning in their respective roles, featuring an intense young Haymitch confronting a vividly costumed Effie with her striking purple wig, which has already sparked significant fan engagement across social media platforms.

Fanning’s portrayal of Effie Trinket marks a notable departure from Elizabeth Banks’ four-film depiction. In this prequel, Effie takes on the role of Haymitch’s stylist, preparing him for the spotlight and educating him about the art of image-making ahead of the 50th Hunger Games. This new dynamic promises to create a distinct relationship between Haymitch and Effie, moving beyond the legacy established by Banks and Harrelson in the original films.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman discussed Fanning’s casting with The Hollywood Reporter, emphasizing the need for an actress who could honor Elizabeth Banks’ iconic legacy while revisiting Effie’s formative years. She noted that Fanning was the “undeniable fan favorite from the start.”

Regarding the casting of Haymitch, producer Nina Jacobson acknowledged the challenge of following Woody Harrelson’s iconic performance. In an interview with Variety, she stated, “nobody can be Woody Harrelson but Woody Harrelson,” while expressing the need for an actor who could embody Harrelson’s inherent mischief and convincingly portray the jaded character audiences first encountered. Based on the recently released footage, Zada seems to be rising to that challenge.

Set during the 50th Hunger Games, 24 years prior to the events of the original story, the film boasts a star-studded ensemble. Ralph Fiennes portrays President Coriolanus Snow, Kieran Culkin takes on Caesar Flickerman, Jesse Plemons plays a young Plutarch Heavensbee, Maya Hawke appears as Wiress, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, and Whitney Peak plays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s girlfriend and a descendant of Rachel Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird from ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.’

The narrative focuses on Haymitch as he leads a rebellion against the Gamemakers during his own Games, serving as an origin story for the isolated and bitter figure Katniss encounters in the original trilogy, while also explaining the dormant spark she eventually reignites. This structural premise gives the prequel a clear dramatic purpose, avoiding mere nostalgia.

Francis Lawrence, who has directed every ‘Hunger Games’ film since ‘Catching Fire,’ returns to helm the project, with a screenplay by Billy Ray and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force. The film is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. With such an impressive cast and the backing of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel, the franchise’s return to Panem is poised to be one of the most eagerly awaited releases of the holiday season.
