Avengers: Doomsday is poised to be one of the most significant events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in years. This film will see Robert Downey Jr. making a highly anticipated return, but this time as the iconic villain Doctor Doom instead of Tony Stark. Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, the movie is expected to unite heroes from various Marvel franchises as the Multiverse Saga approaches its climax.

Marvel has already assembled a massive ensemble cast, making this film one of the studio’s most ambitious crossover projects to date.

Currently, the movie is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, but recent rumors indicate that Marvel might be considering an earlier release date. If these reports hold true, it could help the studio avoid direct competition with Dune: Part Three and secure valuable IMAX screens during its opening week.

While Marvel has not commented on the speculation, fan excitement continues to grow as audiences eagerly await the next trailer and more details about Doctor Doom’s role in what could become one of the MCU’s most pivotal films.

The rumor was brought to light by entertainment commentator John Campea, who discussed the potential change on The John Campea Show. According to Campea, Marvel executives have had internal discussions about moving the film’s release date from December 18, 2026, to December 11, 2026. He emphasized that nothing has been officially confirmed, but stated, “discussions have taken place.”

If the rumor proves accurate, it would represent yet another shift for this highly anticipated Marvel film. Avengers: Doomsday has already faced several delays, initially slated for May 2025 before being postponed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. It was then pushed back again to December 18, 2026, to allow for additional production time.

This December release presents another challenge, as Warner Bros. has already scheduled Dune: Part 3 for the same day. This matchup has sparked considerable discussion among movie fans, with many humorously dubbing the simultaneous release “Dunesday,” reminiscent of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon that saw Barbie and Oppenheimer debut together in 2023.

Some fans have even planned to watch both films on opening day. However, sharing the same weekend could lead to complications beyond mere box office rivalry.

One significant issue involves IMAX screens. According to reports cited by Campea, Warner Bros. has secured an exclusive three-week IMAX window for Dune: Part 3 in the United States. This would leave Avengers: Doomsday without access to domestic IMAX theaters during its opening weekend, potentially impacting ticket sales significantly.

Shifting the film’s release forward by one week could alleviate much of that issue. It would provide Marvel with at least one full week of exclusive IMAX screenings before Dune: Part 3 arrives, allowing fans who desire the premium viewing experience to see Avengers: Doomsday on IMAX screens before they transition to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel.

Campea also highlighted another reason the earlier date could be beneficial. Sony recently shifted the next Jumanji film from December 11 to Christmas Day, leaving that weekend without a major blockbuster. This creates an opportunity Marvel might seize if they decide to proceed with the change.

The rumor has also been covered by other entertainment outlets, including The Wrap and The Big Picture Podcast, which have mentioned the possibility of Marvel reevaluating the film’s release schedule. However, no official confirmation has come from Marvel Studios or Disney.

For now, fans should regard the report as speculation rather than fact. Marvel is known for keeping major announcements under wraps until plans are finalized, so there is no certainty that a date change will actually occur.

If it does happen, it could be a savvy business move. Rather than splitting audiences and losing crucial IMAX revenue during opening weekend, Avengers: Doomsday could enjoy a full week as the top film in theaters before Dune: Part 3 arrives.

Until Marvel makes an official announcement, the film remains scheduled to premiere on December 18, 2026. Whether fans will experience the much-discussed “Dunesday” event or two separate blockbuster weekends is a decision only Marvel can make in the coming months.
