‘Beyond The Spider-Verse’ Production Update Miles Morales Fans Can Breathe Easy
Few animated sequels have tested fan patience quite like the conclusion to Miles Morales’s trilogy. Ever since ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ left audiences hanging with one of the most gut-wrenching cliffhangers in recent superhero cinema, the wait for its follow-up has stretched on for years, delayed repeatedly by strikes, script revisions, and the ambitious vision that Lord and Miller set out to achieve.
That wait has now yielded a new sign of progress, with writer-producer Christopher Miller confirming that the film remains deep in active production and that work in the editing room is advancing well. This update comes after a series of delays that pushed the film from its original March 2024 release date all the way to June 2027, a shift of more than three years from when fans first anticipated seeing how Miles’s story would conclude.
Much of that delay stems from the story’s development process. Miller has previously explained that the need to dismantle what they had created and rebuild it from the ground up was the main factor behind the extended timeline, forcing the creative team to rework significant portions of the film’s middle, even after the beginning and ending had been largely settled.
Sony Pictures Animation co-presidents Damien de Froberville and Kristine Belson have also credited Lord and Miller’s ability to frequently review and provide feedback throughout development as a key factor in minimizing costly changes later in animation. This workflow was reportedly enhanced by the duo editing their sci-fi film ‘Project Hail Mary’ on the same studio lot as the Spider-Verse team, allowing for closer collaboration between the writers and the animators.
The production has also been bolstered by the addition of technical talent, with cinematographer Alice Brooks joining the team and bringing live-action camera techniques that Sony claims have pushed the visual style in new directions not explored in the first two films. Miller has noted that the team is utilizing virtual camera technology and the Unreal Engine for previsualization, a process carried over from their experience on ‘Project Hail Mary.’

Directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson have remained at the helm throughout, working from a screenplay credited to Lord, Miller, and ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ co-writer David Callaham. The returning voice cast includes Shameik Moore as Miles, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, along with Brian Tyree Henry, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, and Oscar Isaac, with the story picking up directly from the cliffhanger that left Miles trapped in an alternate universe, fighting to save his family.
Lord and Miller have consistently emphasized that no one is applying more pressure on the production than they are on themselves, expressing a continuous drive to surpass their previous two films rather than simply meet a deadline. This mindset has characterized the project since its inception, when what was initially planned as a single sequel grew so expansive that the creative team decided to split it into two separate films to fully realize the story they wanted to tell.
With the film now aiming for a June 2027 release and ongoing reassurances that production is on track, this latest update provides fans with something they have not experienced much throughout this journey: genuine momentum. After years of delays, scrapped sequences, and shifting release dates, hearing that the editing process is progressing smoothly is a welcome indication that Miles Morales’s story is finally nearing its conclusion.
