Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are shedding light on the long-awaited next installment in the Jump Street franchise, which has officially been titled 24 Jump Street. This update emerged during a recent discussion on The Empire Podcast, where the duo talked about their upcoming animated finale Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and their return to the comedy series that established their careers in Hollywood.

According to Lord and Miller, 24 Jump Street is actively in development, with director Rodney Rothman overseeing a rewrite of a script that has remained unused for several years. Rothman, who co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is working to refresh the next chapter while maintaining the chaotic essence of the previous films. Miller noted that the project is essentially being revived from an older draft, explaining that while a version of the script existed, it was “dusty” and required substantial updates before proceeding.

The title itself carries a humorous nod to the franchise’s legacy. Lord shared that an earlier concept for the sequel was titled 23 Jump Street, but the team opted to leap ahead. He humorously stated during the podcast, “We’re calling this 24, out of respect for the dead.” This remark highlights the series’ trademark self-aware humor, which often pokes fun at the notion of endless sequels while still embracing them.

The film is anticipated to bring back key figures from the series, including Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube, although their participation is still in preliminary discussions. Producers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Neal H. Moritz are all set to return, continuing their long-standing connection with the franchise.

While an official start date for production has yet to be announced, reports from Variety suggest that the project is actively progressing, with writing responsibilities shared among Rodney Rothman, Jonah Hill, and Meghan Malloy.

Meanwhile, Lord and Miller are juggling several major projects, including the completion of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which they indicated is deep in the editing process. This film is still aiming for a 2027 release and is being developed with an ambitious IMAX presentation in mind. Despite this significant animation project, the filmmakers emphasized that 24 Jump Street remains a priority and is steadily advancing behind the scenes.

Currently, 24 Jump Street is in development, but the combination of returning talent, a revitalized script, and the franchise’s history of subverting its own conventions suggests that the next installment will likely embrace its absurdity once more.
