Filming an ancient Greek epic in some of the most challenging locations has proven to be a tough endeavor, and Christopher Nolan’s cast has shared numerous stories about the demanding experience during the press tour. With mountain hikes, rope systems through dense forests, and hours spent reaching cave shoots, ‘The Odyssey’ has certainly earned its reputation as one of Nolan’s most physically taxing productions.

In a recent interview with Extra, Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway discussed their experiences on set, which quickly turned into a playful exchange. What began as a conversation about the filming challenges transformed into a moment that fans have eagerly shared online.

The crux of the banter highlighted a stark contrast in their experiences. Holland recounted the daily grind of hiking up and down mountains to reach the filming location, while Hathaway revealed she had a much different mode of transportation available.

Hathaway explained that her elaborate queen costume as Penelope would take longer to reassemble after a sweaty hike than it was worth, as she lacked armor to sweat into like some of her co-stars. She mentioned to Extra that she was offered a helicopter ride to set, and sheepishly admitted to keeping quiet about it whenever others complained about the trek back down.

This revelation about the helicopter has sparked the kind of lighthearted teasing that fans adore, especially since both actors have been candid about the production’s challenges. Hathaway shared how Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas incentivized the crew with small prizes, like electronics, for those who could reach the top of the mountain the fastest, turning the daily hike into a competitive event.

Holland has also been vocal about the shoot’s intensity in various interviews, recalling a trek to the Cyclops cave set that involved hours of walking from town, up a mountain, and through a rope system constructed by the crew just to arrive at the location. He expressed his amazement at the scale of Nolan’s vision, even as a young actor who primarily observed.

Despite her prior collaborations with Nolan on ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Interstellar,’ Hathaway admitted that this production still intimidated her, humorously noting that it was daunting regardless of her experience with the director.

The contrast between Hathaway’s helicopter ride and the rest of the cast’s mountain hikes highlights the physically demanding nature of ‘The Odyssey’ and how the challenges varied based on costume and character. This behind-the-scenes anecdote is likely to resonate with fans long after the press tour concludes.

As the film’s IMAX shoot is already being hailed as one of Nolan’s most ambitious projects, stories like this one provide audiences with insight into the lengths the cast went to in bringing ‘The Odyssey’ to life. The film is set to hit theaters on July 17.
