Sam Raimi’s iconic demonic possession franchise continues to deliver thrilling conclusions, and the latest entry is no different. ‘Evil Dead Burn’ premiered this week as the sixth chapter in the series, showcasing director Sébastien Vaniček’s intense, blood-soaked vision of a family reunion that spirals into chaos.

The plot follows Alice, a newly widowed character portrayed by Souheila Yacoub, who finds refuge with her late husband’s family just as a Deadite infection wreaks havoc in their home. The film is packed with relentless gore, earning praise from critics as one of the most violent installments in the franchise, featuring a standout fight scene inside a car that has been highlighted as a true spectacle.

However, the biggest buzz from audiences isn’t about the high body count; it’s the events that unfold after the credits roll. ‘Evil Dead Burn’ features two post-credit scenes, with the second reigniting a storyline many fans believed was concluded.

In the mid-credits scene, viewers see the family’s grandmother, now fully transformed into a Deadite. She drags herself along a roadside, missing a hand, when a passing driver stops to assist her. The grandmother feigns innocence long enough to lure the woman close before attacking, a moment that critics have noted captures the franchise’s signature blend of horror and dark humor.

The post-credits scene takes a bizarre turn. It revisits the crematorium from earlier in the film, focusing on a lonely child and an urn with a familiar name. In a shocking conclusion, Ellie, the possessed mother from ‘Evil Dead Rise,’ who was thought to be eliminated in that film’s woodchipper finale, emerges through a mirror and kills the child, chillingly declaring, “Mommy’s back” directly to the camera.

This twist is genuinely unexpected, especially considering that ‘Evil Dead Rise’ concluded with Ellie’s Deadite form being destroyed in a woodchipper, alongside a chainsaw stabbing. The post-credits scene does not clarify how she survives or the significance of the ashes and urn, nor does it seem particularly concerned with those details.

What this scene does achieve is thematically linking ‘Burn’ back to ‘Rise.’ While ‘Evil Dead Burn’ largely stands alone, it connects to its predecessor through the detail that the Deadite responsible for Alice’s husband’s death originated from the events of ‘Rise.’ The mirror twist keeps that connection alive without enforcing a strict continuity, suggesting a pattern in this era of the franchise where separate households are intertwined by the same curse.

The future direction of the story remains uncertain. The next confirmed installment, ‘Evil Dead Wrath,’ is set decades earlier in 1972, making it challenging to see how a resurrected Ellie fits into that narrative unless a time jump occurs. More likely, the ending serves as a setup for a future sequel that will align with the present timeline.

In addition to the twist ending, much of the pre-release discussion around ‘Evil Dead Burn’ centered on its lead character. Yacoub shared with ComicBook that she and director Vaniček aimed to portray Alice as a relatable individual rather than a typical horror icon. “I don’t know much about horror… I’m a little flower,” she remarked, emphasizing the intention to steer clear of the usual final girl archetype.

Initial reviews of the film have been mixed, with some critics praising its impressive set pieces while others criticized its heavy reliance on CGI in the latter half and a tone that leans more towards brutality than the franchise’s traditional balance of horror and dark comedy. Nevertheless, even those who were not entirely sold on the film’s pacing have highlighted the ending as a bold and surprising move for a series that has been captivating audiences for over four decades.

Whether Ellie’s return will serve as the foundation for the franchise’s next chapter or simply remain a haunting final image is yet to be determined, but it has certainly sparked plenty of speculation among horror fans in the meantime.
