Music biopics have seen their share of box office successes, but few genres in Hollywood carry as much financial risk as a film centered entirely on one artist’s life. Studios have repeatedly discovered that transforming a musician’s biography into a blockbuster demands a level of crossover appeal that most films in this category rarely achieve.

This is what makes the ongoing theatrical success of the Michael Jackson biopic so extraordinary. Since its debut in April, the film has quietly rewritten the record books for the genre, and its box office trajectory shows no signs of slowing down even months after its release.

The film, titled ‘Michael,’ has now grossed approximately 993.5 million dollars at the global box office, positioning it just a few million dollars away from becoming the first biopic in history to surpass the one billion dollar mark. It has already outperformed ‘Oppenheimer’ to become the highest-grossing biographical film ever made, a feat that once seemed nearly unattainable for a genre focused on real-life stories rather than fantastical narratives.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and penned by John Logan, ‘Michael’ chronicles the singer’s journey from his early days performing with his brothers in the Jackson 5 to the pinnacle of his solo career, culminating in some of his most iconic performances. Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s real-life nephew, stars in the title role, marking his acting debut, alongside Juliano Valdi as the younger version of the singer.

The film’s earnings break down into a domestic total of around 371.6 million dollars and an international haul of about 620.1 million dollars, with the United Kingdom leading all overseas markets at 71.4 million dollars. This international strength has been a defining feature of the film’s performance, particularly in markets like Japan, where a June release through Kino Films provided an additional boost toward the billion-dollar milestone.

‘Michael’ has already set several box office records, dethroning ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to become the highest-grossing music biopic ever before later surpassing ‘Oppenheimer’ for the title of highest-grossing biographical film of all time. It also stands as Lionsgate’s biggest release in studio history, overtaking ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ to claim that honor.

However, the path to this success was not entirely smooth. Lionsgate had to invest approximately fifty million dollars in reshoots after the Jackson estate raised concerns regarding how the screenplay addressed material related to one of Jackson’s accusers. This change delayed the film’s release by nearly a year and pushed its final budget to somewhere between 155 million and 200 million dollars.

This approach has also influenced the film’s critical reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics have been notably divided, with only 38 percent of reviews rated positively, while general audiences have responded much more favorably, giving the film an A minus CinemaScore. Critics have noted that the film largely avoids the more controversial aspects of Jackson’s life, a choice that seems to have paid off commercially, even as it attracted mixed reviews from critics.

The supporting cast includes Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Jackson’s parents, Joe and Katherine, with Miles Teller and Laura Harrier rounding out the ensemble. With word of mouth continuing to drive ticket sales seventeen years after Jackson’s passing, the film has demonstrated that audience interest in his story remains as strong as ever.

Lionsgate has already confirmed that a sequel is in the works, and the film’s conclusion, which ends with the words The Story Continues, all but assures that more of Jackson’s narrative is set to unfold on the big screen. As ‘Michael’ nears the billion-dollar milestone, it is poised to permanently alter what studios believe is achievable for the music biopic genre in the future.
