In the fourth episode of ‘Sugar’ season 2, John Sugar’s quest for answers takes a harrowing turn, leaving at least one character gasping for breath on the desert floor. Titled “Off 15,” the episode resumes right where the previous one concluded, with Sugar cornered by the very man he has been pursuing all season.

The private detective drama has woven its second season around the mystery of a missing man named Ji Moon and the corrupt officer intent on silencing him. This episode finally brings these two storylines to a head, resulting in a confrontation that is both messier and more personal than fans may have anticipated.

The episode begins with a flashback to the night Ji first encountered the man now hunting him. In the present, John Sugar finds himself being interrogated by two sheriffs regarding his presence during the raid on the Ez4 gang’s headquarters. One of the sheriffs is Vega, who noticed Sugar’s gaze during the raid as he checked his watch.

Sugar has already connected Vega’s movements and timepiece to a figure captured on hospital security footage the night Ji stole drugs and Chuy was murdered. This means Sugar enters the interrogation room fully aware that he is likely facing a killer. Vega shares a lighthearted anecdote about actor Jude Law before dismissing his fellow officer from the room.

Once alone, Vega switches off the recorder and directly questions Sugar about how he recognized him. Sugar reveals it was the way Vega moved and checked his watch that gave him away. He then confirms his knowledge of Vega’s involvement in Chuy’s murder and that Vega now needs to eliminate Ji, who witnessed the crime.

At least three sheriffs are reportedly observing the exchange from behind a one-way mirror, heightening the tension. Someone within the department seems to instruct Vega to leave Sugar alone, although he is unaware of who issued that order.

With Sugar temporarily sidelined, Vega refocuses on Ji. He visits Hannah McDaniels, claiming he is trying to protect Ji from the dangerous individuals pursuing him, persuading her that aiding in locating him is the safer option.

Vega instructs Hannah to proceed with a planned drug deal with Ji at a shopping mall, telling her to hand over the money, take the drugs, and let him walk away. His team secretly places a tracking device on Ji’s car during the meeting to avoid a confrontation in the crowded mall.

Meanwhile, Sugar deduces Ji’s potential location through a small but significant detail. A travel photo he sees reminds him of a similar image on Danny’s fridge, leading him to a remote property in the Mojave Desert.

Ji, already unconscious from the drugs he consumed before the meeting, becomes the focus of a desperate rescue plan once Sugar realizes Vega’s team is closing in.

Upon arriving at the desert ranch, Sugar understands he cannot outrun Vega’s team with Ji unconscious. He instructs his associate Tyler to hide, keeps Ji inside the house, and orchestrates an elaborate ruse that relies entirely on perfect timing. Sugar uses medication to make it appear as though Ji has succumbed to an overdose before Vega’s crew arrives.

The plan succeeds, and Vega’s men depart after collecting money, taking Ji’s phone, and retrieving the hidden tracker, unaware that they left behind a body that was never truly dead. This moment parallels the episode’s opening flashback, where Vega killed a man named Chuy while Ji hid in a closet nearby, but this time Vega walks away without discovering anyone concealed in the room.

Once the coast is clear, Sugar administers naloxone and performs CPR, reviving Ji just as the episode concludes. This serves as a fitting payoff to Sugar’s earlier voiceover about having only three minutes to save someone from an overdose.

Charlotte Fischer continues to be an enigmatic presence throughout the episode, appearing briefly on the surveillance footage Sugar has set up in his hotel room. He confronts her about it at the bar, and she claims a housekeeper let her in to leave a flirtatious note.

While her explanation seems plausible, longtime viewers of ‘Sugar’ have reason to remain skeptical, given how meticulously the show has been developing her storyline. The official synopsis for the episode hinted at a rift between Sugar and Charlotte, and although their bar conversation remains civil, the underlying tension suggests that trust between them is far from secure.

With Vega’s superior pulling strings from an unseen location and Ji now indebted to the man who saved his life, ‘Sugar’ has set up numerous threads for the latter half of the season to unravel. Who do you believe is truly orchestrating Vega’s actions, and will Ji Moon’s near-death experience alter the kind of man he becomes for the remainder of the season?
