Russo Brothers Hint at Future Marvel Movies After ‘Secret Wars’
Joe and Anthony Russo are not ready to part ways with Marvel Studios just yet. During a discussion at SXSW London, highlighted by Cosmic Marvel, the directing duo addressed the possibility of continuing their work with the studio after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ concludes the current saga, and their response left the door open for a potential return.
When asked directly if they might keep making Marvel films post-Secret Wars, Anthony Russo referenced ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which they had similarly viewed as the conclusion of a narrative arc that began with ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.
“The stories we’re focused on now are complete. ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ speak with one another as two films, and they form a complete expression,” Anthony explained, according to Deadline. He added that the possibility of collaborating with Marvel again after that point is certainly on the table, although their current focus is solely on finishing ‘Secret Wars’.
Joe Russo took a lighter approach when asked about future projects, joking that the brothers would check back in on their own photos come 2028 before making any commitments. They also shared that they are currently managing both films, fine-tuning the visual effects on one while laying the creative groundwork for the other simultaneously.
Joe noted that they are still working on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and expect to remain involved until around November, when the film will be handed over to others for final touches. Meanwhile, ‘Secret Wars’ has already entered what the brothers describe as pre-production, even as they juggle both projects at once.
These comments come after months of speculation regarding the Russos potentially extending their MCU involvement even further. Fan outlet The Cosmic Circus has reported that the Russos are already developing an additional Avengers movie beyond the two currently announced, suggesting that this project could either stand alone or emerge from ‘Secret Wars’ being split into two films. While this rumor remains unverified, Anthony’s response makes the idea sound more plausible than mere speculation.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following on December 17, 2027. The two films are designed to function as a single closed narrative arc rather than the beginning of an open-ended series. Robert Downey Jr. will return as Doctor Doom across both entries, marking one of the most significant villain shifts the franchise has attempted in years.
For now, Marvel fans will have to read between the lines. The Russos have made it clear that ‘Secret Wars’ is their finish line for this particular commitment, but with the unconfirmed report from The Cosmic Circus and Anthony’s own reluctance to close the door, it seems this might not be the last time AGBO and Marvel Studios collaborate.
