Lionsgate Makes History as First Independent Studio to Achieve $1 Billion Film
Recently, Lionsgate appeared to be a studio in search of direction. After several underwhelming years at the box office, many industry experts speculated that the company might need to merge with or sell to a larger entertainment entity to stay afloat. However, the studio has orchestrated one of Hollywood’s most remarkable comebacks, driven by a series of successful releases, notably the record-breaking performance of ‘Michael’.
As reported by The New York Times, Lionsgate has officially become the first independent studio to have a $1 billion film after ‘Michael’ surpassed this milestone at the global box office. This achievement marks a pivotal moment for the company and significantly alters the narrative regarding its future.
Just a year ago, Lionsgate was grappling with serious hurdles. The studio released 17 films in 2024 but only managed to earn $251 million at the domestic box office. This represented an 85 percent decline from its peak year in 2012, when franchises like ‘The Hunger Games’, ‘Twilight’, ‘Madea’, and ‘The Expendables’ collectively generated over $1.7 billion in ticket sales. As disappointing results persisted, Lionsgate’s stock price fell, leading many to believe that selling the company was its best option.
Instead, the studio committed to ambitious projects. One of its most significant risks was ‘Michael’, a biopic about Michael Jackson directed by Antoine Fuqua. Several major Hollywood studios reportedly passed on the film, deeming it too risky due to the controversies surrounding Jackson’s life. Nevertheless, Lionsgate chose to proceed, with Universal and Kino Films partnering to distribute the movie internationally.
This decision turned out to be a resounding success. ‘Michael’ became Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film ever and the first in the studio’s history to reach $1 billion globally. The film also set the record as the highest-grossing music biopic of all time.
The triumph didn’t end there. Lionsgate also scored another major hit with ‘The Housemaid’, adapted from Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel. According to The New York Times, the thriller grossed over $400 million worldwide from a modest production budget of just $35 million. The studio has already begun developing sequels for both films, establishing two new franchises in the same year.
Sean Diffley, head of media and entertainment research at Morgan Stanley, believes Lionsgate has demonstrated its ability to thrive as an independent studio.

“They’ve proven they can operate on a stand-alone basis in an effective manner — that they can still create big hits and find fresh I.P. in a tricky market.” He also noted that larger companies still have advantages, stating, “At the same time, there’s certainly a view in the market that scale matters.”
Lionsgate is now capitalizing on this momentum with a busy release schedule. The studio has another ‘Hunger Games’ film set to arrive later this year, along with future projects that include a ‘Rambo’ prequel, two new ‘John Wick’ movies, ‘Now You See Me 4’, sequels to ‘The Passion of the Christ’, a new ‘Blair Witch Project’, and another ‘Saw’ film.
The New York Times also highlighted that Lionsgate’s television division remains robust, producing series for major platforms while its library of over 20,000 film and television titles generates more than $1 billion in annual revenue.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson is optimistic about the company’s future.
“I’m incredibly optimistic about where we’re headed, with every project driven by the distinct creative vision of some of the most talented filmmakers in the industry.”
For a studio that was recently seen as a potential acquisition target, the last year has dramatically shifted its outlook. Thanks to ‘Michael’ and several other successful releases, Lionsgate has transformed from fighting for relevance to making Hollywood history as the first independent studio to own a billion-dollar blockbuster.
