Anya Taylor-Joy has been busy building an impressive and varied resume in Hollywood, seamlessly transitioning between acclaimed limited series, blockbuster franchises, and unique genre projects. Her latest venture takes her back to television in a role that perfectly suits her distinctive style of controlled chaos.

The project is ‘Lucky,’ a crime thriller based on Marissa Stapley’s bestselling novel, featuring a star-studded cast that adds to the excitement of the summer. Apple has been generating buzz around the series for months, and this week, fans received the eagerly awaited news.

The first two episodes of ‘Lucky’ will premiere on Apple TV this Wednesday, July 15, launching a seven-episode series with new episodes released weekly until the finale on August 19. Taylor-Joy plays the titular character, a con artist whose life unravels after a multimillion-dollar heist goes awry, forcing her to evade both the FBI and a merciless crime boss.

Joining her in this thrilling narrative is Annette Bening as Priscilla, the formidable mob leader with deep connections to Lucky’s past. Timothy Olyphant portrays John Armstrong, Lucky’s father, who raised her in a life of crime. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor completes the main cast as Agent Billie Rand, the federal agent on Lucky’s trail, alongside Drew Starkey as her husband Cary and Clifton Collins Jr. and William Fichtner in recurring roles.

The series is created by Jonathan Tropper, who co-showruns alongside Cassie Pappas, with Reese Witherspoon serving as an executive producer through her Hello Sunshine banner. Taylor-Joy also takes on an executive producer role through her production company, LadyKiller, allowing her to influence the story beyond her on-screen performance.

Taylor-Joy has put in significant physical effort to bring her character to life. She shared that filming at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas involved shooting through the night, aiming to portray Lucky as someone constantly on the edge, rather than a typical superhero navigating the plot.

This intense, grounded energy is evident in the show’s marketing, with the trailer showcasing Lucky sprinting through a casino, pursued by FBI agents while clutching a stack of cash and frantically searching for her missing husband. A tense moment between Bening’s Priscilla and Taylor-Joy’s Lucky in the trailer highlights the personal and dangerous nature of their shared history.

For Taylor-Joy, ‘Lucky’ represents her first leading television role since ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ catapulted her to fame in 2020, and it’s her first series since ‘Peaky Blinders’ concluded in 2022. This project also marks her reunion with Apple TV following her 2025 film ‘The Gorge,’ providing the streaming service with another significant vehicle centered around her star power.

The timing is also favorable for Olyphant, who is involved in another Apple TV series this year, ‘Stick,’ which has already been renewed for a second season, although his participation in the follow-up has not yet been confirmed. Together, Taylor-Joy and Olyphant bring substantial star power to ‘Lucky,’ making it one of the most anticipated debuts of the summer streaming season.
