Adult Swim’s flagship sci-fi comedy continues to riff on beloved films this season, and the trend shows no signs of slowing as the show races toward its finale.

Last week, fans witnessed Rick and Morty navigating an evolutionary prison disguised as a rainforest parable. The buildup to episode eight hinted at another cinematic homage infused with the show’s signature chaos. This time, the target was Darren Aronofsky’s dark addiction drama, transformed into something far more absurd.

Titled “Rickuiem Mort a Dream,” this episode quickly establishes the central conflict between the two leads. It opens with Rick in a surprisingly good mood, enjoying coffee and preparing to distill liquor in his home lab—until Morty accidentally wrecks the entire setup while asking for a ride to buy Pokémon cards. This incident becomes the emotional core that drives the rest of the episode.

Rick’s anger escalates into a rare moment of vulnerability as he presents a holographic chart tracking his happiness against Morty’s presence, coldly revealing that the two lines have never intersected. This brutal admission sets the stage for the bizarre bargain that follows. To rebuild his distillery, Rick needs a rare alien potato, which can only be won through an interplanetary dance competition. He persuades Morty to compete by implanting a creature called Sympathin in his ear, a parasite that amplifies empathy.

While Morty dances his way toward the potato under the influence of his newfound empathy, a separate crisis unfolds for Jerry and Summer. Tasked with gathering mundane supplies, they stumble upon a man hoarding barrels linked to a series of murders. To escape danger, Jerry roleplays as a fellow serial killer, creating an elaborate alter ego called the Birthday Killer and staging a convincing fake ritual. However, the plan unravels when Summer’s cover is blown, leaving Jerry trapped in the killer’s house as police surround the property.

After winning the potato and being freed from the Sympathin by Rick, Morty ignores the warning about the parasite’s potential consequences. Upon teleporting home and discovering his father held hostage, Morty reinserts the empathy bug into his ear, leading to the episode’s climax back on Earth. Instead of Morty resolving the situation, it’s Rick who channels that borrowed empathy, coaxing the killer out of the house with the promise of a hug.

The moment unfolds with the dark emotional weight typical of the show, as the killer steps outside, genuinely seeking that embrace, only to be immediately shot down by the surrounding police. Back home, Rick offers Morty a rare, sincere apology for dismissing his grandson’s warning signs throughout the episode, even portaling a fresh batch of Pokémon cards into Morty’s room as a peace offering. However, Morty cannot bring himself to enjoy the gesture, ending the episode on a more subdued note than the chaos that preceded it.

In the final scene, Rick is back in his rebuilt distillery, drinking a large mug of beer loudly enough to drown out the Sympathin creature itself, telling it that there are no hard feelings as the episode fades to credits. This would be a fitting, if slightly muted, conclusion, but the post-credits tag adds another layer worth exploring. It revisits an earlier montage featuring a teacher named Miss Underwood, whom Morty empathized with during his Sympathin-fueled dance sequence. This time, however, Morty crosses out her name to write “Understood” instead.

This small change hints that not everything Morty experienced under the parasite’s influence was as genuine as it seemed, leaving the true nature of his empathy in this episode somewhat ambiguous. As the season approaches its final stretch, such loose threads feel intentional, a detail that ‘Rick and Morty’ loves to plant right before a finale reshuffles everything fans thought they understood. Whether this thread will be picked up again remains to be seen as the season heads toward its last episode.
