Disney is gearing up for the next chapter in the ‘Descendants‘ saga, and fans of Red and Chloe are eagerly anticipating its arrival. ‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ promises to immerse viewers in a version of Wonderland that diverges significantly from the seemingly perfect ending of the last film.

With an impressive cast, a new villain, and a storyline that explores the repercussions of altering the timeline, this fifth installment has high expectations. Here’s everything confirmed about the release, plot, and cast.

‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ is set to premiere on Disney Channel on July 16, 2026, with a Disney+ release following on July 17. This release strategy mirrors previous entries in the franchise, allowing cable viewers to watch first before it transitions to streaming.

The original soundtrack will also be available through Walt Disney Records on July 17, ensuring fans can enjoy the music shortly after the film’s debut. Production wrapped about a year before the release, with filming taking place in Vancouver, Canada, starting in March 2025 and concluding before July of that same year.

Returning to their leading roles, Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker reprise their characters as Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe Charming, daughter of Cinderella and King Charming. Leonardo Nam returns as the film’s main antagonist, taking on a much darker role this time.

The cast also features several new faces, including Liamani Segura as Pink, Brendon Tremblay as Max Hatter, Alexandro Byrd as Luis Madrigal, and Kiara Romero as Hazel Hook. Additionally, Joel Oulette plays Robbie Hood, and Zavien Garrett portrays Felix Facilier.

The film also introduces twin brothers Squeaky and Squirmy Smee, played by Dayton Paradis and Ryan McEwen, who are the sons of Mr. Smee, roles previously portrayed by different actors in ‘Descendants 3’. Returning cast members include Brandy as Cinderella, Rita Ora as the Queen of Hearts, Paolo Montalban as King Charming, and Melanie Paxson as Fairy Godmother. A fun surprise is Awkwafina, who will voice Chessy the Cat, a new character created for this installment.

The official synopsis picks up right where the last film concluded. With the Queen of Hearts now friendly and Cinderella safe, everything appears perfect for Red and Chloe. However, their time travel has inadvertently spawned a new villain, Maddox Hatter. This twist introduces a darker conflict, as the threat to Wonderland comes from someone familiar to the girls.

When Maddox captures the Queen of Hearts, Red and Chloe must join forces with Red’s new sister Pink, Luis Madrigal’s son, Captain Hook’s daughter Hazel, and Maddox’s son Max to rescue her and save Wonderland. This dynamic adds an intriguing layer, as Max must choose between loyalty to his father and doing what is right, echoing the moral dilemmas that have always been central to the franchise.

Beyond the family drama, a significant structural shift is occurring in this timeline. The narrative revolves around a butterfly effect caused by Red and Chloe’s time travel, resulting in Wonderland merging with Auradon, with the Rabbit Hole now accessible to all. This alteration means that several storylines from earlier films may change, as some characters have reportedly been erased or replaced in this new timeline.

This film is officially a sequel to ‘Descendants: The Rise of Red’ and marks the fifth entry in the overall ‘Descendants’ film series. This milestone makes ‘Descendants’ a franchise record holder, tying or surpassing other long-running Disney Channel franchises in terms of total entries.

Kimmy Gatewood directs the film, with a screenplay by Tamara Chestna, Dan Frey, and Ru Sommer. On the production side, Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh serve as executive producers, while Chestna and Gatewood also co-executive produce. As a musical entry, choreography is crucial, with Emilio Dosal confirmed as the choreographer, a key detail for fans of the franchise’s dance-heavy sequences.

There are also discussions about the future of the franchise. While Disney has not confirmed a release date for a sixth ‘Descendants’ film, the success of ‘Wicked Wonderland’ could influence the direction of the franchise. For now, all eyes are on this installment and whether it meets the expectations surrounding its darker premise.

With Maddox Hatter emerging as the primary threat and Max caught in the middle, this new chapter of ‘Descendants’ is poised to challenge everything fans believed about Wonderland’s happy ending. Will Max choose to side with his father or defy him to save the Queen of Hearts?
