‘The Whisper Man’ Trailer Released for Robert De Niro and Adam Scott Film
Netflix excels at transforming bestselling thrillers into star-studded event films, and its latest endeavor is poised to deliver late summer chills. This year’s lineup has prominently featured prestigious names linked to genre material, and this new project is no exception. Fans of psychological crime dramas have ample reason to be excited.
The film in focus is ‘The Whisper Man’, adapted from Alex North’s New York Times bestselling novel of the same name. The narrative is inspired by North’s 2019 book and revolves around a chilling concept involving a convicted serial killer associated with a series of child disappearances.
A first trailer for the film has just been unveiled, confirming that this psychological thriller stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, and Adam Scott. The plot follows Tom Kennedy, portrayed by Scott, a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old son is kidnapped, prompting him to seek assistance from his estranged father Pete Willis, played by De Niro, a retired police detective who discovers a link between the abduction and a decades-old case involving a convicted serial killer known as the Whisper Man.
Monaghan completes the main trio as Amanda Beck, the lead detective assigned to the case of the missing boy.
James Ashcroft directs the film, with a script penned by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer. The cast also includes Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Acston Luca Porto, and Will Brill, with Michael Keaton and John Carroll Lynch reportedly joining the ensemble. The project boasts a strong production team, including Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting, alongside executive producers Marcus Viscidi, Tim Connors, and Alex Leb.
This film marks Netflix and AGBO’s sixth collaboration, following successful partnerships on titles like ‘The Gray Man’, ‘The Electric State’, the ‘Extraction’ films, and the ‘Extraction’ spin-off series ‘Mercenary’. Angela Russo-Otstot, AGBO’s chief creative officer, expressed that ‘The Whisper Man’ is a gripping thriller, but fundamentally, it is a poignant and intricate tale of fathers and sons, emphasizing the studio’s gratitude for having one of the finest actors of his generation, Robert De Niro, leading the narrative with James Ashcroft at the helm.
The Motion Picture Association has rated the film R for bloody violence, disturbing imagery, suicide, language, and brief sexual references, indicating that this adaptation will not shy away from the novel’s darker themes. For De Niro, this project continues his recent trend in the streaming thriller genre, following ‘The Irishman’ and the series ‘Zero Day’, while Scott expands on the dramatic range he displayed in ‘Severance’, and Monaghan adds to her impressive résumé that recently included ‘The White Lotus’.
‘The Whisper Man’ is set to debut globally on Netflix on August 28, and the marketing has already heavily emphasized its unsettling playground rhyme to build atmospheric dread ahead of the release. With such a talented cast and a premise rooted in buried secrets resurfacing, the film faces the challenge of delivering a satisfying conclusion. Are you ready to lock your doors and hit play after watching the trailer, or are you bracing for the Whisper Man to come knocking?
