Lucy Lawless Reveals How “Horrible” Filming Nude Scenes on ‘Spartacus’ Was
Lucy Lawless has built a remarkable career in genre television, from wielding a sword as Xena to navigating the harsh politics of ancient Rome in ‘Spartacus.’ Throughout her journey, she has been open about the challenges actors face in an industry that often demands more than what audiences see.
This honesty was evident during her recent appearance on the ‘Inside of You’ podcast, where host Michael Rosenbaum asked Lawless about the physically demanding aspects of her career. What began as a discussion of her extensive body of work evolved into a candid exploration of the realities of filming some of television’s most infamous nude scenes.
Lawless shared that her time on ‘Spartacus’ was the first occasion she filmed nude scenes, and she did not shy away from describing how unglamorous the experience truly was. When asked if this was her first time with nudity, she admitted that she had largely blocked the memory from her mind during her interview on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum.
She clarified that both she and the production were aware that nudity would be part of her role, so it was not an unexpected element. However, she was taken aback by how uncomfortable filming those scenes turned out to be, especially when Rosenbaum compared intimate scenes to the common belief that they must be enjoyable simply because of how they appear on screen.
Rosenbaum noted that many assume filming make-out scenes is fun, but in reality, it involves hard, technical work in front of numerous crew members. Lawless wholeheartedly agreed, describing that dynamic as genuinely stressful. She then turned the question back to Rosenbaum, who confirmed he had done intimate scenes but had never experienced full nudity.
When pressed further about her own experience, Lawless bluntly summarized it as simply horrible. She recounted a story that illustrated the tense atmosphere on set, where background performers navigated exposed and vulnerable situations, recalling an incident where an extra became furious after someone accidentally stepped on her costume tail during a crowded scene.
This anecdote aligns with Lawless’s previous comments about her time on the show. She has differentiated between nudity and intimate scenes involving physical contact, explaining that while nudity becomes somewhat easier to handle over time, scenes involving movement and interaction remain deeply uncomfortable due to the instinctive need to protect oneself in such rare situations.
Lawless portrayed Lucretia across multiple seasons of the Starz series, a character often placed in the center of the show’s elaborate, sexually charged scenes. The series became known for pushing boundaries regarding nudity on premium cable, long before other prestige dramas followed suit, making Lawless one of the first television actors to openly discuss the less glamorous aspects of those scenes.

Her remarks come at a time when discussions about intimacy coordination and actor comfort on set are increasingly prominent, with many productions now hiring dedicated professionals to manage the kind of stress Lawless described. Reflecting on her experiences on a show that predated many of these protections, her insights provide a candid look at how industry standards have evolved since ‘Spartacus’ first aired.
Lawless remains active beyond her genre television roots, with recent projects including the documentary ‘Never Look Away’ and an upcoming role in the New Zealand drama ‘Pike River.’ Her willingness to speak openly about the more challenging aspects of her career only enhances her reputation for being candid about the realities of life in front of the camera.
