‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Begins Production with Exciting Footage
Middle-earth has remained silent on the big screen for over a decade since ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ wrapped up Peter Jackson’s second trilogy in 2014. Fans have long wondered if Warner Bros. would ever return to live-action storytelling in this beloved universe, particularly with ‘The Rings of Power’ taking center stage on television.
That wait is finally coming to an end as ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ has officially entered production, and the studio has quickly shared what that entails. The film brings back much of the original creative team, with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens all playing significant roles behind the scenes.
Warner Bros. has unveiled the first behind-the-scenes footage from the initial day of filming, featuring the character fans have eagerly anticipated. The clip showcases Andy Serkis arriving on set in a full motion capture suit, flipping through the script, and asking a crew member, “What are we gonna start with?”
Serkis then transitions into Gollum’s iconic crouch, hunching his shoulders and contorting his face into the character’s recognizable snarl before action is called. The footage also includes a sweeping drone shot of New Zealand’s majestic mountains, confirming that production has commenced in the same rugged landscape that defined Jackson’s earlier films.
In addition to reprising his role as Gollum, Serkis is also directing the film, marking a significant creative advancement as he takes charge of one of the most anticipated fantasy projects in recent years. This dual role as both star and director gives him a uniquely personal investment in the outcome of this new chapter in Middle-earth.
The cast features a mix of returning favorites and new faces. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf, Elijah Wood is back as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace reprises his role as the elf king Thranduil. Newcomers include Jamie Dornan as Strider, along with Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall, and Anya Taylor-Joy joining the ensemble.
Set between the events of ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’, the narrative follows Aragorn’s dangerous mission to find Gollum before he can reveal the secret of the One Ring. Much of the story draws from Tolkien’s appendices, allowing filmmakers to explore a chapter of the timeline that has never been fully depicted on screen.
For Serkis, returning to Gollum is filled with nostalgia as he reunites with collaborators he has known for decades. “It couldn’t be better,” he shared with Variety about working with his Middle-earth family again. He noted that many crew members have been with the franchise for around 25 years, with generations of their children now involved as well.
The performance capture technology available to Serkis has significantly advanced since his earlier portrayals of Gollum. He previously explained to Deadline that the original trilogy’s motion capture was mostly limited to indoor sets, requiring animators to replicate his performance rather than capturing it directly.
Technological advancements from the Planet of the Apes films and developments in Avatar’s technology have allowed for more nuanced, portable performance capture that can now be utilized outdoors, as seen in the new footage from New Zealand.
Filming is expected to continue through the end of the year, giving the team about twelve months to finish shooting and tackle the extensive visual effects work ahead. While Warner Bros. has kept plot details largely under wraps, the studio clearly hopes that this first look at Serkis back in character will rekindle the excitement that made the original trilogy a cultural phenomenon.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027, giving fans ample time to speculate on how this new chapter will connect to the story they already cherish.
