‘Michael’ Breaks Box Office Records in Nigeria with Historic Earnings
Michael Jackson’s cultural impact in Africa has always been profound, but the extent to which it translates into box office success this year has been remarkable. Antoine Fuqua’s biopic ‘Michael’, featuring Jaafar Jackson as his legendary uncle, has been rewriting box office records across various continents, with its latest achievement emerging from a market not typically associated with Hollywood dominance.
The film’s theatrical performance in Nigeria has become a significant topic within the country’s cinema landscape this year, largely fueled by Jackson’s enduring legacy among West African fans. This milestone is particularly impressive considering it was achieved without the involvement of one of the region’s largest cinema chains.
According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, ‘Michael’ has surpassed the 800 million naira mark at the Nigerian box office, solidifying its status as one of the highest-grossing films ever released in the country. The film earned nearly 12 million naira in just one recent week, maintaining a strong performance since its premiere in late April.
This achievement is even more noteworthy given that Filmhouse Group, one of Nigeria’s major cinema exhibitors, did not screen the film. Industry experts estimate that a full rollout across all major chains could have pushed the film’s domestic total to as high as one billion naira, suggesting that the current figures may not fully capture the audience demand for the film.

The demand for ‘Michael’ was particularly evident at a single venue in Lagos. EbonyLife Cinemas grossed over 100 million naira during the film’s opening weekend, prompting CEO Mo Abudu to publicly celebrate this achievement. She confirmed that EbonyLife Cinemas was ranked the top cinema location in West Africa for the film’s performance, calling the results exceptional and a testament to the venue’s commitment to providing unforgettable cinema experiences.
This single location performance also allowed ‘Michael’ to secure the record for the biggest opening weekend for a Hollywood release in Nigeria, as well as the largest opening for any biopic globally, with a worldwide debut exceeding 217 million dollars. The film’s success in Nigeria has continued to grow steadily, regularly outperforming even strong local Nollywood films at the national box office.
The success at the Nigerian box office reflects a broader trend across the African continent during the film’s release. ‘Michael’ has also topped the charts in South Africa and Kenya, with South Africa alone contributing over 3.5 million dollars to the film’s international earnings. Industry insiders consider these figures significant, especially given the smaller theater presence and lower ticket prices in most African markets compared to the US or Europe.
The context makes Nigeria’s numbers even more impressive. Modern cinema access in the country is largely limited to a few major cities, with Nigeria’s cinema infrastructure representing only a fraction of the screen capacity found in Western markets. Achieving record-breaking numbers under these conditions highlights the lasting impact of Michael Jackson’s music and legacy across West Africa, nearly two decades after his passing.
On a global scale, the film’s success continues to escalate, having already surpassed Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time, while also dethroning ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as the top-grossing music biopic in history. With ‘Michael’ maintaining a strong presence in African markets months after its release, it is evident that its box office success is not merely a Western phenomenon but a truly global achievement.
