Tom Holland Discusses Sadie Sink’s Mysterious Role in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ has been generating excitement for months, particularly surrounding one enigmatic character that isn’t related to Peter Parker’s next adversary. Marvel and Sony have kept details about Sadie Sink’s role tightly under wraps, leaving fans speculating about her character as the film’s late July release date approaches.
The studios seem to be employing a similar strategy as they did for ‘Spider-Man No Way Home’, where significant plot elements remained concealed until viewers experienced the film firsthand. Sink revealed that she didn’t receive a script until she arrived in London for filming, leading fans to theorize that she might portray a young version of the X-Men character Jean Grey, though no confirmation has been made.
Recently, Tom Holland shared his thoughts on Sink’s performance. In an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff for Noovie’s Close Up, Holland was asked about standout performances in the film, and he immediately highlighted Sink alongside his co-star Zendaya.
Holland told Collider that there are two remarkable moments in the film, starting with Sink’s, stating she “handled the pressure of the character that she’s playing with such grace, and the third act, she steals the movie. It is so good.”
He also praised a scene featuring Zendaya, calling it one of the best he has ever been part of, but was careful to note that both moments are major spoilers he could not discuss further. His co-star Jon Bernthal, who portrays Frank Castle in the film, echoed Holland’s sentiments about Zendaya, describing her as an actor who instantly grounds a scene and adds authenticity to everything around her.
The discussion also covered the evolving relationship between Holland’s Peter Parker and Bernthal’s Frank Castle. Holland explained that their dynamic shifted during production into something warmer than what was originally scripted, attributing this change to his real-life friendship with Bernthal and director Destin Daniel Cretton allowing the actors to improvise rather than strictly adhering to the script.
Sink joins a talented cast that includes Zendaya as Michelle Jones, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as Bruce Banner, and Tramell Tillman and Michael Mando rounding out the ensemble. This film marks the fourth installment in the MCU’s Spider-Man series, following ‘Spider-Man No Way Home’, with Sony and Marvel continuing to keep Sink’s exact role as one of the franchise’s best-kept secrets.
The mystery surrounding her casting dates back to March when it was first announced that Sink would join the film in an undisclosed role. Reports indicate that she was offered the part without auditioning, having previously collaborated with director Destin Daniel Cretton on 2017’s ‘The Glass Castle’, which seemingly gave the filmmaker confidence in her abilities.
‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ is set to hit theaters on July 31, giving fans just a few more weeks to speculate before Holland’s hinted third-act reveal finally clarifies who Sink is portraying. Until then, the actor’s comments have only intensified the guessing game that has dominated the film’s promotional efforts for months.
