The eagerly awaited film adaptation of ‘Children of Blood & Bone’ made a stunning debut at CinemaCon in April, captivating audiences with its first look. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood returns to feature filmmaking for the first time since 2022’s ‘The Woman King’, diving into the rich world of Tomi Adeyemi’s cherished fantasy novel. This presentation marked a pivotal moment for African-inspired storytelling in cinema, with Paramount positioning the project as a major tentpole release for the upcoming year.

Since its release in 2018, Tomi Adeyemi’s source material has enchanted millions of readers globally. The novel quickly became a number 1 New York Times bestseller and is part of the groundbreaking Legacy of Orïsha series, garnering widespread acclaim and numerous awards. With over 2 million copies sold, it even made TIME magazine’s list of the top 100 fantasy books of all time. The story’s West African-inspired setting and themes of reclaiming power have resonated with audiences seeking representation in the fantasy genre.

The kingdom of Orïsha serves as the backdrop for what Prince-Bythewood is bringing to life. The film is set in a fictional African kingdom where various clans possess unique magical abilities, including elemental powers and gifts like healing or foresight. At the center of this world is Zélie, the protagonist determined to restore magic to her oppressed people, portrayed by Thuso Mbedu in her significant film role following ‘The Woman King’.

The cast for ‘Children of Blood & Bone’ is a remarkable assembly of acclaimed talent. Oscar winner Viola Davis plays Zélie’s mother, Mama Agba, while two-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo takes on the role of naval commander Admiral Kaea. Six-time Emmy nominee Idris Elba portrays the priest Lekan, and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the tyrannical King Saran. This impressive ensemble reflects Paramount’s ambition for the project as a franchise-worthy event film.

Amandla Stenberg and Damson Idris portray Princess Amari and Prince Inan, respectively, with Tosin Cole completing the core cast as Tzain. BAFTA winner Lashana Lynch appears as Jumoke, and Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, along with veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, are among the latest confirmed additions to the production. The international cast mirrors the story’s African setting and Paramount’s aim to create a truly global fantasy epic.

As the film took shape during production, Prince-Bythewood’s approach to adapting Adeyemi’s intricate narrative became clear. She described her vision as a “grounded fantasy epic,” emphasizing that despite the magical elements, she wanted audiences to feel a sense of realism, starting with production design. This philosophy extended to filming locations, as the director chose to shoot across the African continent instead of relying on studio sets or extensive visual effects.

Collaborating closely with Adeyemi on the screenplay, Prince-Bythewood ensured that the author’s vision remained integral to the cinematic adaptation. Her previous work with Viola Davis on ‘The Woman King’ established a creative shorthand that influenced the physicality and ensemble dynamics seen in the CinemaCon footage. Attendees described the footage as sweeping and visually ambitious, filled with high-stakes action and showcasing a bold evolution of the filmmaker’s signature style.

The transition from Adeyemi’s beloved novel to the big screen has sparked significant excitement among fans. The first look at ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ has fans dubbing it “The One” and igniting fervent discussions online, as the film emphasizes Black representation in fantasy while promising magic, power, and a groundbreaking fantasy world. The exclusive footage revealed a brewing power struggle between forces of good in a stunning magical kingdom and those intent on eradicating magic altogether.

The film’s release arrives at a time when the entertainment industry is increasingly shifting towards more inclusive storytelling and diverse creative leadership. Prince-Bythewood’s selection as director and the prominent roles for Black actors throughout the ensemble underscore a deliberate effort to center African and African-American talent in the fantasy genre. During the CinemaCon presentation, Regina King articulated that “Black girls deserve to see themselves in worlds of wonder, power and imagination,” which encapsulates the core mission of the adaptation.

‘Children of Blood & Bone’ is set to hit theaters and IMAX on January 15, 2027, giving audiences approximately six months from the CinemaCon reveal to eagerly await the film’s full release. The exclusive screening at the industry convention served as the first official look at the adaptation, with the public looking forward to additional trailers and promotional material in the coming months. With production completed and post-production in progress, Paramount is positioning the film as one of its flagship releases for early 2027.
