Matt Damon has dedicated decades to balancing a prominent Hollywood career with his responsibilities as a father. However, his latest film required him to make a significant adjustment to a family rule he has adhered to for years.

Recently, the actor discussed the personal sacrifices involved in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, revealing that the extensive filming meant he had to spend more time away from home than usual. During an appearance on TODAY on July 14, Damon shared that his family has always maintained a “two-week rule,” which aimed to keep them from being apart for longer than two weeks at a time. Unfortunately, for ‘The Odyssey’, that rule had to be broken.

“It just took more, and it took more out of our family, and they had to, you know, we’ve always had a two-week rule. This was the first time that we ever had to violate it,” Damon explained on TODAY.

He elaborated that filming Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic required him to be away from his wife Luciana Barroso and their children for longer stretches than usual. Instead of adhering to the two-week limit, there were instances where he was away for approximately three and a half weeks.

“There was like stretches of like three and a half weeks, and we were just away from each other,” he noted, describing this experience as a significant sacrifice for his family.

Despite the challenges, Damon expressed gratitude for his family’s support in his decision to take on this role, acknowledging their understanding of the project’s importance to him. After years in the industry, he viewed ‘The Odyssey’ as a unique opportunity he couldn’t afford to miss.

“It was hard on us, and I’m so proud of the movie, but I’m so proud of them for really encouraging me,” Damon said. “I feel like my whole professional life built up to this experience, and they really were really on board with me doing it, and I love them for that.”

Damon and Barroso are parents to three daughters: Isabella, Gia, and Stella, and he is also a stepfather to Barroso’s daughter Alexia. The actor has previously emphasized the importance of being actively involved in his children’s lives despite the demands of his acting career.

In a past interview with The Guardian, Damon discussed how the two-week rule helped him remain a present parent. He described making the effort to travel back and forth during productions to spend weekends with his family, even if it meant enduring exhausting overnight flights and tight schedules.

“The good news is that the kids know that I’m going to be home every weekend,” Damon stated at the time.

‘The Odyssey’ pushed Damon beyond the limits of many of his previous projects. In a conversation with Willie Geist for TODAY’s Sunday Sitdown, he described the film as the most challenging he has ever undertaken due to its vast scale and ambition.

“Definitely the hardest movie I’ve ever done, just because it was so ambitious,” Damon remarked, calling it the “capstone” of his career.

Directed by Nolan, ‘The Odyssey’ boasts a star-studded ensemble cast, including Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. The film brings Homer’s ancient tale to life with one of the most ambitious productions of Nolan’s career.

For Damon, this movie signifies more than just another role; it represents a career milestone that necessitated a tough family decision, one that he says his loved ones supported wholeheartedly from the very start.
