‘The Odyssey’ Defies Online Skepticism with Impressive Box Office Performance
Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has spent the last few weeks battling a narrative that had nothing to do with its epic themes of monsters, gods, or a long journey home. Even before audiences settled into theaters, a vocal segment of the internet had already declared the film a flop, and that sentiment lingered through its opening weekend.
Much of the online skepticism focused on the film’s casting decisions. A movement emerged online, criticizing choices like Elliot Page and Lupita Nyong’o, with predictions that audience rejection would lead to a box office disaster. Elon Musk even contributed to the misinformation campaign against the film, intensifying the backlash that had been brewing for weeks.
However, the latest numbers are painting a different picture. Analysts at Box Office Theory noted that the cultural narratives emerging from certain online communities complicated predictions for the film’s success, but they concluded that the backlash had little impact on broader audiences. In fact, they suggested that the controversy may have actually increased awareness of the film beyond Nolan’s usual fanbase.
International day one figures support this assessment, showing the film performing well in most markets. Comparisons to ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Dune Part Two’ revealed that France was significantly outperforming both films, even as Indonesia’s numbers were softer than expected. This mixed but largely positive reception aligns with what distributors typically anticipate from a global rollout of this magnitude, rather than indicating any coordinated audience rejection.

The critical reception has also played a significant role. With a review embargo lifted, the film boasts a certified fresh rating of around 98 percent from over 100 critics on Rotten Tomatoes, a figure strong enough to quell many of the pre-release flop predictions. Nolan’s appeal among younger audiences, including millennials and Gen Z, has been identified as a crucial factor in the film’s potential for success as it heads into the weekend.
Financially, the outlook appears stable as well. With a reported budget of $250 million, the film seems poised to recoup nearly all of that during its opening weekend alone, especially since Nolan completed production on time and under budget. Projections suggest the film could eventually gross around $925 million worldwide, a figure that would place it among Nolan’s biggest career successes if it maintains its momentum.
Regardless of whether the loudest online critics change their minds, the box office results so far indicate that ‘The Odyssey’ has answered the most pressing question for Universal. With record-setting previews, strong critical ratings, and international numbers surpassing Nolan’s previous benchmarks, the narrative of a flop is increasingly at odds with the reality unfolding in theaters.
