‘The Odyssey’ Breaks Box Office Records in International Markets
Christopher Nolan’s box office appeal has always been evident, but the international release of ‘The Odyssey’ has surprised even seasoned industry analysts. Universal’s aggressive marketing strategy, particularly emphasizing the film’s IMAX features, has resulted in impressive ticket sales across various key international markets.
Mexico stands out as a significant market in this global rollout. According to Deadline’s box office tracking, ‘The Odyssey’ garnered 1.5 million dollars on its opening day, marking the highest Thursday debut for a Nolan film in the country and exceeding ‘Oppenheimer’s’ performance by over 70 percent in 2023.
This remarkable single-day performance positioned the film as Mexico’s box office leader, capturing a dominant 52 percent of the market and outperforming ‘Toy Story 5’ by three times. For a three-hour, R-rated adaptation of an ancient Greek epic, this level of success against a major animated release highlights the extensive reach of Nolan’s brand beyond his typical genre.
The film’s performance in premium formats is particularly noteworthy, ranking as the third-largest IMAX opening day in Mexico, following ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. Achieving such a milestone for a non-franchise, original story is a rare accomplishment, especially without a built-in comic book audience.

Looking ahead, early projections indicate that ‘The Odyssey’ could earn between 7 million and 9 million dollars over its four-day opening in Mexico. This estimate may be influenced by the ongoing FIFA World Cup final, which could affect theater attendance. Even at the lower end of this range, the film is set to surpass Nolan’s previous non-Batman opening in Mexico, while the higher end could bring it close to his all-time record.
The current record is held by ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, which opened to 9.7 million dollars in Mexico, a benchmark that has stood for over a decade. For context, ‘The Dark Knight’ opened to 7 million dollars, while ‘Oppenheimer’ earned 5.4 million, indicating that ‘The Odyssey’ is already on track to surpass one of Nolan’s blockbusters and potentially challenge another.
Mexico isn’t the only international market showing strong early results for the film. Deadline’s global tracking also highlighted impressive Thursday openings in Germany, where ‘The Odyssey’ debuted with 1.5 million dollars and captured a 54 percent market share, and in Brazil, where it outperformed ‘Oppenheimer’ by 85 percent, marking Nolan’s biggest opening day in that market and the country’s largest IMAX opening day of the year.
With a worldwide opening weekend forecast exceeding 200 million dollars, these individual market records suggest that ‘The Odyssey’ is shaping up to be a truly global box office phenomenon rather than just a North American hit.
