Christopher Nolan’s impressive box office history continues to shine, as the figures for ‘The Odyssey’ this weekend indicate that the director has surpassed even his own lofty expectations. Following a promotional campaign featuring sold-out IMAX 70mm screenings and presale numbers that had industry experts likening it to some of the most significant theatrical events in recent years, the film’s actual opening day performance is living up to all the excitement.

Early studio estimates reveal that ‘The Odyssey’ amassed 50.6 million dollars domestically on its opening day, a total that includes Thursday preview screenings which set their own record at 17.6 million dollars, marking the strongest previews for any film in 2026 thus far. This impressive single-day total ranks as the second largest opening day for any movie released in 2026, only behind the year’s top animated blockbusters.

The film’s R-rating adds another noteworthy aspect to this achievement. As an R-rated release, ‘The Odyssey’ has recorded the fourth largest opening day for any R-rated film in box office history, a remarkable accomplishment for a three-hour mythological epic without a pre-existing franchise fanbase. Such strong opening day numbers for a film in this rating category place it among the most significant R-rated releases ever to grace theaters.

Building on this momentum, Deadline is projecting a three-day opening weekend total of approximately 117 to 120.5 million dollars for the film, which would mark the best live-action opening of 2026 and a career high for Matt Damon as a leading man. This figure significantly exceeds 2007’s ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’, which was Damon’s previous personal best at 69.2 million dollars, representing more than a doubling of his prior record in a single leap.

If these projections hold, ‘The Odyssey’ would also claim the title of the biggest R-rated opening weekend of the year, surpassing the horror hit ‘Backrooms’ and its 81.4 million dollar debut, while simultaneously becoming the highest-grossing R-rated opening in Universal Pictures’ history, overtaking ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and its 85.1 million dollar opening. For Nolan, this projected opening would rank as the third best start of his directing career, following ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ at 160.8 million dollars and ‘The Dark Knight’ at 158.4 million dollars.

Internationally, the film has also performed strongly, with The Hollywood Reporter estimating a global weekend total nearing 257.8 million dollars, which includes 137.3 million dollars from overseas markets.

This worldwide total would push ‘The Odyssey’ well beyond Nolan’s 2023 best picture winner ‘Oppenheimer’, which opened to a comparatively modest 82.4 million dollars domestically before ultimately grossing 975 million dollars worldwide during its entire run.

Audience reactions mirror the critical acclaim, with the film receiving an A CinemaScore and boasting a certified fresh score in the high 90s on Rotten Tomatoes, ranking among the best-reviewed films of Nolan’s career. As official weekend numbers are still being finalized, ‘The Odyssey’ appears poised to dominate the box office narrative as the year’s most significant theatrical event to date.
