Exit Poll Data Reveals Why Audiences Turned Out for ‘The Odyssey’
Christopher Nolan’s latest epic has hit theaters with one of the most impressive ensembles of his career, featuring stars like Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron in a grand adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem. With such a stellar cast, it might seem logical that audiences flocked to see their favorite stars.
However, the actual box office results tell a different tale. ‘The Odyssey’ achieved a remarkable opening weekend, with Friday previews alone bringing in $51.2 million and the full three-day domestic total projected at $120.5 million. This makes it the best live-action opening of the year and a career high for Matt Damon as a lead.
According to exit polling data reported by Deadline, the primary reason for this turnout can be attributed to one name: Christopher Nolan. A significant 51 percent of moviegoers cited the director as their main reason for purchasing a ticket, surpassing any individual cast member. The ensemble cast collectively attracted 44 percent of the audience, while Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, garnered a lower 27 percent.
This disparity highlights the strength of Nolan’s brand, which has grown significantly beyond any single actor he collaborates with. Despite having one of the most talented casts of his career, audiences predominantly based their decision to see the film on the director’s name rather than any specific performer.
The polling data also uncovered interesting trends regarding how fans acquired their tickets. According to PostTrak figures cited by Deadline, 53 percent of ticket buyers secured their seats a week or more in advance, while only 47 percent opted for same-day purchases on Friday. This reflects the high demand for sold-out IMAX 70mm screenings that had been building for months prior to the release.

For Robert Pattinson, the film also marks a significant career achievement. ‘The Odyssey’ stands as his fifth highest opening ever at the domestic box office and his fifth film to surpass the $100 million milestone, joining the ranks of ‘Twilight: New Moon’, both parts of ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn’, and ‘The Batman’.
Internationally, the film’s success has been equally impressive, with global markets pushing the worldwide opening weekend total to approximately $257.8 million, making it the third highest global opening of the year, trailing only ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ and ‘Toy Story 5’. For Nolan, the domestic opening ranks as the third best of his career, following ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’.
As reviews continue to praise the film’s impressive ensemble while recognizing Nolan’s direction as the key creative force, the exit poll results confirm what the marketing campaign emphasized from the start: this was always marketed as a Christopher Nolan film first, rather than a star vehicle for any individual actor.
