What We Know About ‘Treasure & Dirt’ Season 2 Release Date and Details
The six-part crime thriller, based on the novel by bestselling author Chris Hammer, features Michael Dorman and Liv Hewson as the lead detectives. Set in the dust-choked opal mining town of Nulla, the series follows big city detective Ivan Lucic as he investigates the shocking beheading of a local miner, with Nell Buchanan assisting him in uncovering the town’s secrets.
Since the show has yet to air its first episode, there is currently no official word from ABC regarding a follow-up season. A UK air date tracker simply lists the show’s renewal status as unknown, noting that if a second season occurs, it would be labeled Season 2. Fans eager for concrete news will need to wait and see how the debut season performs.
One reason a follow-up season seems plausible is the source material itself. ‘Treasure & Dirt’ is the latest adaptation from Chris Hammer’s works, and Hammer has built a career on writing multiple crime novels, several of which could potentially provide future storylines if ABC decides to continue exploring his bibliography.
Created for television by Matt Cameron, who wrote five of the six episodes and served as Executive Producer, the series also features Kate Mulvany, who penned the script for the second episode.
This strong creative team, combined with an author who has a wealth of material to draw from, is exactly what networks look for when considering additional installments. While it doesn’t guarantee a second season, it does indicate that the potential for more ‘Treasure & Dirt’ exists beyond this initial outback mystery.
Produced by Rebecca Summerton of South Australia’s Closer Productions, the series received support from the Easy Tiger production through the ABC SAFC Content Pipeline Fund. Directed by Madeleine Gottlieb, the show lists Executive Producers Ian Collie, Rob Gibson, Matt Cameron, and Gottlieb, along with ABC Executive Producers Rebecca Anderson and Rachel Okine.

The cast includes Dean O’Gorman, Mark Mitchinson, and Thomas M. Wright, rounding out the ensemble alongside Dorman and Hewson. O’Gorman plays a character known as ‘The Irishman’ within the story. With such a talented cast and crew, working from a proven crime novelist’s world, it signals that ABC may be considering a long-term investment in this series.
The financial backing for ‘Treasure & Dirt’ is significant for a debut season. The production is expected to contribute $8.4 million to South Australia’s economy and has created around 120 jobs for a predominantly South Australian crew. The show also received funding from Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation while filming on location in Coober Pedy.
This level of investment, along with the involvement of the BBC alongside ABC, indicates that this is not just a small passion project that the network will abandon if it performs moderately well. ‘Treasure & Dirt’ joins previous collaborations between Closer Productions and ABC, such as ‘Ladies in Black’ and ‘Gold Diggers’, showcasing a track record of ABC returning to producers whose shows resonate with audiences.
For now, everything regarding ‘Treasure & Dirt’ Season 2 remains speculative, but with promising numbers, fans are eager to see if Ivan and Nell’s investigation in Nulla will attract enough viewers to warrant a second season.
