Summer 2026 has already brought its share of blockbuster surprises, but nothing compares to the wave that swept through multiplexes this past weekend. Universal Pictures had been preparing for this moment for years, banking on one filmmaker’s name alone to support a massive budget and an even larger cast. The gamble, it turns out, paid off in a way that even the studio’s most optimistic forecasts could not have predicted.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ debuted as the director’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, featuring Matt Damon as the wandering king Odysseus. The ensemble cast reads like an awards season fantasy draft, including Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, along with Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o.

Filmed entirely on IMAX cameras, the movie had already sold out over a dozen 70mm IMAX screenings a full year before its release, showcasing the immense anticipation surrounding Nolan’s first project since ‘Oppenheimer.’

That anticipation has now translated into numbers that few could have foreseen. ‘The Odyssey’ opened to $124.5 million domestically and surpassed $250 million worldwide in its debut frame, marking the biggest global opening of Nolan’s career. This achievement eclipses even the international launch of ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ which was previously considered the high-water mark for a Nolan release.

The comparison to Nolan’s previous films highlights the significance of this debut. ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ opened globally to $248.9 million in 2012, while ‘The Dark Knight’ launched to $198 million in 2008. ‘Oppenheimer,’ Nolan’s Best Picture winner from 2023, opened to $180.4 million worldwide. ‘The Odyssey’ has now surpassed all three, achieving this without the benefit of a co-release event like the Barbenheimer phenomenon that boosted ‘Oppenheimer’ three years ago.

Critics and audiences seem equally enthusiastic, as reflected in the ticket sales. The film has earned a Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade from CinemaScore, a combination that typically indicates strong word of mouth and lasting box office performance in the weeks to come. With an estimated $250 million production budget and around $125 million allocated for marketing, the film will require a long, healthy run to recoup its costs, but this opening provides a significant head start.

Part of the film’s success can also be attributed to its format. Premium large formats, including IMAX, Dolby, and 70mm screenings, accounted for over half of all domestic ticket sales, with IMAX alone contributing a significant portion of the opening weekend total. This kind of premium format dominance has become a hallmark of Nolan releases, and ‘The Odyssey’ seems to have embraced it more than any of his previous films.

With no major new wide releases scheduled for the upcoming weekend, ‘The Odyssey’ appears set to continue dominating theaters with minimal direct competition. Industry analysts are already speculating about a potential path toward a billion-dollar global total, which would place it among the year’s biggest hits. For Nolan, whose films have increasingly become cultural events, this opening solidifies his status as one of the few directors capable of transforming an original, R-rated epic into a genuine theatrical phenomenon.
