Is ‘XO, Kitty’ Ending With a Movie Instead of Season 4? Here’s the Latest Update
Teen rom-coms often struggle to maintain their popularity, but ‘XO, Kitty’ has defied the odds since its debut on Netflix. Initially a light-hearted spinoff of the ‘To All the Boys’ universe, it has evolved into one of the streaming giant’s most reliable young adult successes, resonating deeply with its audience season after season.
This track record makes the current uncertainty surrounding the show feel particularly surprising. Netflix is known for its swift renewals of popular teen series, yet for the first time, ‘XO, Kitty’ seems to be in a holding pattern.
‘XO, Kitty’ Season 3 premiered on April 2, 2026, and quickly demonstrated its appeal, garnering 12.9 million views within the first four days and topping Netflix’s English-language television chart. By June 30, the viewership had surged to 29.3 million, ranking the season as the 16th most-watched series on Netflix during that reporting period.
Despite these impressive numbers, Netflix has yet to announce the show’s future. Unlike the previous two seasons, which were renewed promptly, the fate of ‘XO, Kitty’ now appears to hinge on two distinct possibilities.
The first option is a conventional fourth season, allowing Kitty and her friends to have a proper conclusion to their high school journey at KISS. The alternative is a feature-length movie that would tie up the remaining storylines in a single installment rather than extending the series further.
This second option aligns with creator Jenny Han’s previous work. She wrapped up the original ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ trilogy with films, and her Prime Video series ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ is also concluding with a movie after three seasons. Given Han’s storytelling style, a movie for ‘XO, Kitty’ would fit a familiar pattern.
From a narrative perspective, Season 3 concluded at a natural stopping point. It ended with Kitty and her former rival-turned-love interest, Min Ho, reconciling and heading back to the U.S. for him to meet her father.
Showrunner Valentina Garza has hinted that this storyline carries significant emotional weight for the series’ future. In a conversation with Deadline after Season 3’s release, she did not confirm a fourth season but noted that Lana Condor’s return as Lara Jean added a sense of completion to the spinoff. She expressed excitement about the crossover between the ‘To All the Boys’ narrative and Min Ho’s storyline.

On paper, the case for renewal appears strong. A young adult series that debuts at number one and retains millions of views months after its release is not typically the type of show that streaming platforms allow to fade away quietly.
However, the delay suggests that Netflix and Paramount Television, which produces the series, might be considering cost-effectiveness and the longevity of the franchise alongside raw viewership numbers. A single farewell film could provide a more straightforward, lower-commitment way to conclude the story while still leveraging the show’s established audience.
For now, fans are left in suspense, much like they have been with past renewal decisions, as they monitor the viewership numbers and analyze every hint from the creative team. Whether Kitty’s journey continues at KISS or concludes on the big screen, one thing is certain: this spinoff has more than earned the opportunity to end on its own terms.
