Netflix has dedicated the last two years to transforming ‘One Piece’ into a flagship franchise, successfully creating a live-action adaptation that has garnered the approval of even the most skeptical fans of the original manga. With Season 2 receiving acclaim and a third season already confirmed, it’s clear that the streaming giant sees potential in expanding this universe beyond the main series.

This expansion has taken an unexpected direction. Instead of merely announcing more live-action content, Netflix has been quietly developing a brick-built spin-off that reinterprets the Straw Hat Pirates’ early adventures through a unique lens, merging the franchise’s adventurous spirit with LEGO’s signature playful humor.

The spin-off has finally unveiled its first full trailer. Netflix has officially released the debut trailer for ‘LEGO One Piece,’ confirming that the animated special will premiere globally on September 29. Alongside the teaser, Netflix also shared new key art and an important update on the voice cast, including confirmation that Jeff Ward will reprise his role as Buggy the Clown.

What sets this project apart from typical animated tie-ins is the choice to involve the live-action cast. Netflix has confirmed that the main live-action Straw Hat crew, including Iñaki Godoy and Mackenyu, will voice their minifigure counterparts, along with several additional cast members from the upcoming second season, who will also lend their voices.

This casting decision provides a sense of continuity that animated spin-offs often lack, allowing fans to hear the same actors who brought these characters to life in live action infuse that same energy into a more whimsical format.

The two-part special recounts the unforgettable events from Seasons 1 and 2 of the pirate saga, with Usopp serving as the crew’s humorously unreliable narrator as he entertains the group’s newest recruit, the reindeer boy hybrid Tony Tony Chopper, with embellished tales of their earlier adventures across the East Blue and into the Grand Line.

This framing device works particularly well for a project catering to two different audiences. The story is crafted to welcome newcomers while also serving as an enjoyable recap for existing fans, providing Netflix with a compelling reason for both longtime viewers and curious newcomers to check it out.

The special is produced in collaboration with the LEGO Group, Japanese publisher Shueisha, and Vancouver-based animation studio Atomic Cartoons, the same studio behind Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends. This combination of partners indicates that Netflix is treating this project with the same level of care it has applied to its flagship live-action series, rather than viewing it as a mere licensing tie-in.

The timing of this release also conveniently aligns with the franchise’s broader roadmap. With Season 3 of the live-action series anticipated sometime in 2027, and a separate anime adaptation titled ‘The One Piece’ also set to debut that February, this LEGO special offers fans something new to enjoy during the wait between major live-action installments.

With merchandise lines, animated specials, and multiple television formats now in development, Netflix seems fully committed to establishing itself as the definitive home for all things ‘One Piece.’ Given the franchise’s success since its live-action debut, expanding with a family-friendly LEGO retelling appears to be a savvy move to broaden its audience even further.
