Disney+ Announces Release Date for ‘Afterlife With Archie’
‘Riverdale’ spent seven seasons exploring the depths of darkness in a small-town teen drama, tackling murder mysteries, cults, and even brief encounters with the undead. Yet, even at its most bizarre, the show never fully embraced the story its creator had envisioned from the start.
That vision is finally coming to life. Disney+ has officially greenlit a live-action adaptation of ‘Afterlife With Archie,’ the celebrated horror comic that transforms the once wholesome town of Riverdale into a zombie-infested nightmare, with the series set to debut around Halloween 2027.
The storyline will revolve around the chaos that ensues when a spell cast by a certain teen witch backfires, unleashing an army of the undead on Riverdale. Archie and his friends must battle for survival while navigating the complexities of their friendships, romances, and loyalties.
For Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who co-created the original comic with artist Francesco Francavilla, this project is the realization of a long-held dream. Aguirre-Sacasa noted that this comic was the foundation of everything, stating that before ‘Riverdale’ or ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,’ there was ‘Afterlife With Archie,’ a collaboration with Francavilla, whom he regards as the best horror artist in the industry.
This connection is deeply personal for Aguirre-Sacasa. Even during his time on ‘Riverdale,’ he often expressed his desire to adapt ‘Afterlife With Archie’ for the screen. While ‘Riverdale’ did touch on themes of zombies and the undead, it never fully embraced the horror elements of the comic.
The new series also marks a reunion between Aguirre-Sacasa and longtime collaborator Greg Berlanti, the prolific producer known for projects like ‘The Flash’ and ‘You.’ Berlanti and producing partner Sarah Schechter shared their enthusiasm about working with Aguirre-Sacasa again, viewing it as an opportunity to revisit beloved characters in a fresh and exciting manner, while also thanking Archie Comics for their trust in bringing these stories to life once more.
This partnership has already yielded two significant Archie adaptations. Aguirre-Sacasa previously created ‘Riverdale’ for The CW, which ran for seven seasons, along with the spinoff ‘Katy Keene’ and the Netflix horror series ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,’ also based on one of his own Archie Comics horror titles.
As Archie and his friends remain teenagers in this new interpretation, none of the previous actors from ‘Riverdale’ or ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ are expected to reprise their roles, although casting details are yet to be announced. Disney executives have stressed that despite the horror elements, the show will maintain the emotional core that resonated with audiences in earlier Archie adaptations.
Disney Kids and Family president Ayo Davis described the project as more than just a zombie story, emphasizing the themes of friendship, loyalty, and humanity that make Riverdale worth fighting for. She predicts that fans will connect deeply with this new version of the gang, even if it might make them scream a little.
This adaptation also marks the first Archie Comics project to find a home on the platform it was originally developed for, giving the franchise its true home at Disney after years of transitioning between Fox, The CW, and Netflix. Given the success of both ‘Riverdale’ and ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ on their respective networks, expectations are already high for this next chapter.
With a Halloween 2027 target and one of television’s most successful teen drama teams at the helm, ‘Afterlife With Archie’ is set to bring authentic horror back to Riverdale in a way the franchise has never fully explored before.
