Prime Video’s flagship Middle-earth series has spent its initial two seasons gradually building up to one of the most awaited character reveals in the entire franchise. Fans have observed Daniel Weyman’s enigmatic Stranger navigate the wilderness for years, piecing together clues about his true identity long before the show confirmed what many viewers had already suspected.

That anticipation is finally being rewarded as Season 3 approaches. With the show preparing for its next chapter, Amazon has started releasing a series of exclusive images designed to remind fans of how much has changed since the Stranger first arrived in Middle-earth.

Empire magazine has now shared the first official look at Gandalf the Grey’s complete transformation for Season 3, featuring his iconic wide-brimmed grey hat, weathered staff, and unmistakable beard. This marks the character’s first true live-action appearance in his classic wizard attire, following two seasons of the Stranger gradually discovering his true self.

The reveal carries added significance given the showrunners’ role in shaping this new look. According to comments made by Weyman to Empire, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay indicated it was finally time for Gandalf to appear as the wizard fans have always recognized from Tolkien’s writings.

Weyman described this transformation as unlocking a completely new aspect of the character that longtime fans should instantly recognize. He shared with the outlet that stepping into the role allowed him to embrace a more mischievous, twinkling energy that aligns with the Gandalf readers have cherished for decades.

The actor also opened up about the emotional significance of finally donning the character’s complete costume for the first time. He described the experience of wearing Gandalf’s hat as unbelievably spine-tingling, admitting he found himself pinching himself throughout filming just to grasp the moment.

This marks Gandalf’s first live-action appearance in any form since Ian McKellen last portrayed the character in 2014’s ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,’ making Weyman’s full transformation a particularly important milestone for the franchise. The timing coincides with Season 3’s storyline, which reportedly features a significant time jump landing at the peak of the War of the Elves and Sauron.

Gandalf is not the only key character receiving a dramatic visual update as the new season approaches. Empire also revealed a first look at Charlie Vickers’ Sauron in his complete, iconic dark armor and crown, marking a stark contrast from his previous disguises as Halbrand and Annatar throughout the show’s first two seasons.

The full feature, which includes additional interviews with cast members like Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel and Robert Aramayo’s Elrond, is set to be featured in Empire’s latest issue, hitting newsstands on July 30. The magazine’s team reportedly spent several days on set at Shepperton Studios gathering material for the story, touring recreations of Khazad-dûm, Rivendell, Númenor, and Mordor along the way.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 3 is set to premiere on November 11, continuing the prequel series’ journey since its 2022 debut. With Season 4 already confirmed for a future release, this latest wave of imagery suggests Amazon is ready to fully embrace the show’s most iconic characters as the narrative moves toward its larger confrontation between good and evil.
