‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ concluded its theatrical run months ago, yet its credits scene continues to spark discussions. The brief appearance of a cloaked figure provided fans with their first glimpse of the MCU’s Doctor Doom, with Robert Downey Jr. set to portray the villain in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Even now, as we approach 2026, that thirty-second sequence is still being analyzed meticulously.

One reason it remains a topic of conversation is that Marvel revealed very little. Doom’s face was completely obscured, and the film hinted at his absence with an empty Latverian seat during a United Nations-style meeting. This secrecy has allowed for various interpretations, and a fan theory circulating online suggests that the figure holding Doom’s mask might not be Doom at all, but someone else entirely in disguise.

Recently, a post from an account named Marvel Mania has reignited this speculation. The theory posits that the individual kneeling in front of baby Franklin Richards, donning Doom’s silver mask, is actually Doctor Strange, not Victor Von Doom. This draws a parallel to Jonathan Hickman’s ‘Secret Wars’ comics, where Strange served as Doom’s loyal ally rather than his adversary.

This theory aligns with something Marvel recently showcased at San Diego Comic Con 2026. The studio revealed a costume labeled the Latverian Witch, featuring a green robe and silver mask displayed against a stained glass backdrop, with its belt adorned by an enigmatic diamond buckle. Rumors suggest that this character could have a more personal connection to Doom than fans initially anticipated.

This revelation has led to a flurry of theories. Some fans quickly linked the mysterious follower to a twisted version of Wanda Maximoff, noting how closely the silhouette mirrors Doom’s visual style. Others refer to reports suggesting that Doctor Strange, Clea, and Scarlet Witch are being positioned as part of Doom’s inner circle in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ making the idea of a Strange-like figure masquerading as Doom seem less improbable.

Even the score seems to add to the enigma. When Matt Shakman was asked about the music cue in the credits sequence, he confirmed to ScreenRant that composer Alan Silvestri had literally titled the track with a question mark, stating, “Yeah, that is what Sylvester called that cue.”

Officially, however, Marvel has seemingly closed this chapter. Sue Storm actress Vanessa Kirby told Variety that it was indeed Downey under that mask, explaining, “Robert’s never not been on set. He’s always there. He is our leader.” This leaves the Doctor Strange theory as mere speculation, no matter how well it aligns with the arrival of the Latverian Witch.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ still months away from release, the true identity of the Latverian Witch and the significance of that “Doom?” cue remain open to interpretation. Do you believe Marvel is concealing something more significant under that mask, or is this just fans overanalyzing a Comic Con costume display? Share your thoughts in the comments.
