‘Extraction 3’ Filming Has Begun with First Look Revealed
Netflix has established one of its most dependable action franchises centered around an unstoppable mercenary, and fans have eagerly anticipated the continuation of his story. Following a cliffhanger that left numerous threads unresolved, the wait for a proper sequel has reached a significant milestone.
This week, that wait officially concluded as filming commenced for the latest chapter in the saga. Chris Hemsworth took to social media to confirm that ‘Extraction 3‘ is now in production, sharing a behind-the-scenes photo with returning co-star Idris Elba and director Sam Hargrave, expressing his excitement about the mission kicking off.
This confirmation ends months of speculation since Netflix greenlit the project earlier this year. Deadline first reported that Hemsworth had finalized his deal to reprise his role as black ops mercenary Tyler Rake, with Hargrave returning as director and Elba and Golshifteh Farahani also confirmed to return from the previous film.
Production is currently taking place in Sydney and the New South Wales South Coast, providing fans with their first real insight into the filming locations for this next installment. This change in backdrop adds a new dimension to a franchise that has taken Tyler Rake through perilous situations across its first two films.
David Weil, recognized for his work on ‘Citadel’ and ‘Hunters,’ wrote the screenplay for this third installment, marking a departure from Joe Russo’s writing on the earlier films. Pat Cunnane also contributed an earlier draft of the script, but specific plot details for this next mission remain closely guarded.
The secrecy also extends to how the story will unfold after the events of ‘Extraction 2,’ which concluded with Rake and his ally Nik Khan successfully completing their mission to rescue Ketevan and her children, albeit with significant repercussions. Whatever lies ahead for Rake seems poised to build on those unresolved stakes.

Angela Russo-Otstot, chief creative officer at AGBO, expressed her enthusiasm for continuing the studio’s partnership with Netflix as the ‘Extraction’ universe expands. She specifically commended the ongoing collaboration with Hargrave and Hemsworth, highlighting the team behind the franchise as a standout for audiences worldwide, according to comments shared with Variety.
The franchise itself continues to hold significant weight within Netflix’s original film lineup, with both previous entries ranking among the platform’s most popular English-language films. The original ‘Extraction’ shattered viewership records upon its 2020 debut, and that momentum clearly carries into this next chapter, now officially in production.
Beyond the main film, the ‘Extraction’ universe is expanding beyond just a sequel. Netflix is also developing a spin-off series titled ‘Mercenary, An Extraction Series’ featuring Omar Sy, along with a separate South Korean spin-off film starring Don Lee and Lisa of Blackpink, indicating the streamer’s commitment to growing this universe.
With AGBO producing under Anthony and Joe Russo’s banner and Hemsworth also serving as a producer through his own Wild State company, this installment benefits from familiar creative support behind the scenes. This continuity, combined with the returning cast, suggests that fans can expect the same intense, hand-to-hand combat style that made the earlier films so successful.
With cameras now officially rolling, ‘Extraction 3’ has transitioned from a long-awaited announcement to a tangible reality for fans of the franchise. What are your hopes for Tyler Rake’s next mission? Share your predictions in the comments.
