The ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Cast Was Asked to Blink Twice About Sadie Sink as Jean Grey
Marvel has successfully executed numerous secretive castings over the years, but few have sparked as much ongoing speculation as this one. With the film’s release just around the corner, one particular mystery has begun to overshadow nearly every other storyline surrounding the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ sequel.
This mystery revolves around Sadie Sink, whose casting in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ was confirmed back in March of last year, yet without any indication of her character. Since then, fans have dedicated over a year to scrutinizing every trailer frame, press appearance, and cryptic response in search of clues.
The prevailing theory centers on Jean Grey, the telepathic X-Men character previously portrayed by Sophie Turner and Famke Janssen in Fox’s earlier film franchise. This theory gained traction early on, especially with the timing of Marvel’s X-Men reboot currently in the works under director Jake Schreier, alongside visual hints from the trailers themselves.
These trailers have heavily featured plot elements involving mutated DNA and a mysterious, powerful antagonist with psychic abilities capable of controlling others’ minds. Coupled with Sink’s striking red hair and reported costume colors aligning with Jean Grey’s classic yellow and green comic book look, the theory has only intensified as the release date approaches.
Aside from Jean Grey, other fan theories have suggested characters like Spider-Girl, Firestar, and Gwen Stacy as potential alternatives, though none have gained the same level of traction. Marvel producer Amy Pascal provided a small hint in the film’s official press notes, describing Sink’s character as experiencing the same feelings of isolation and alienation that other characters in the movie face.
Kevin Feige has also shared insights into how Sink was cast, noting that co-producer Emily Fong recommended her for the role, and director Destin Daniel Cretton, who had previously collaborated with her, quickly agreed she was the perfect choice. While this explanation was warm, it notably avoided confirming any specific character name.
Sink herself has become quite adept at sidestepping the question entirely. During a January appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,’ she described the secrecy surrounding her role as torturous, revealing that she first discovered her casting through fan theories circulating online before Marvel made any official announcement.
In a separate interview with a podcast host, Sink was playfully asked to imagine walking into a store and buying jeans, specifically grey ones, in a not-so-subtle attempt to get her to slip. She laughed off the question, later providing only three joking confirmations in an official Spider-Man promotional video: that she is not Spider-Man, she is not Aunt May, and she is definitely in the movie.
With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set to premiere in theaters on July 31, fans won’t have to wait much longer to uncover the truth. Given how tightly Marvel has managed this particular secret across numerous press appearances, the eventual reveal is shaping up to be one of the year’s most anticipated moments, regardless of which theory ultimately proves correct.
