Adria Arjona Shines in ‘Onslaught’ Promotion Ahead of Release
Adria Arjona has spent the last few years quietly crafting an intriguing career in Hollywood, seamlessly transitioning between prestige television, dark comedies, and award-nominated dramas without fully diving into the realm of action films. That gap in her resume is about to be filled in a significant way.
Arjona’s ascent includes notable performances in projects like ‘Hit Man’ alongside Glen Powell and a highly praised role in the acclaimed ‘Star Wars’ series ‘Andor.’ However, nothing in her filmography has positioned her as a leading action star until now. This transformation comes thanks to a director known for his unique taste in genre chaos.
As the film’s release approaches, GoldenSeries has shared new images of Arjona dazzling at press events for ‘Onslaught,’ showcasing her at various promotional appearances linked to the upcoming A24 release. This film marks Arjona’s first leading role in a full-fledged action movie, placing her at the forefront of director Adam Wingard’s latest genre experiment.
‘Onslaught’ follows Arjona as a former Army sniper turned single mother living in a desert trailer park, compelled to defend herself after a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers escapes from a nearby military facility and threatens her daughter’s safety. The film is directed by Wingard, known for ‘You’re Next,’ ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ and its sequel ‘Godzilla x Kong, The New Empire,’ and features a screenplay co-written with longtime collaborator Simon Barrett.
The collaboration between Wingard and Barrett carries significant weight due to their shared history, having previously created the cult classic ‘The Guest’ in 2014. During the film’s Comic-Con panel, this connection was highlighted, confirming that co-star Rebecca Hall will portray the film’s main villain, a character linked to the covert military experiments that drove the plot of ‘The Guest.’
When asked if ‘Onslaught’ serves as a direct sequel to that earlier film, Hall clarified during the panel that while it is not technically a sequel, it does share meaningful connections with Wingard’s previous work. This ambiguity has only heightened excitement among long-time fans of Wingard’s filmography, who have closely followed his genre output since his early cult hits.
Adding to the sense of a shared universe is the return of Dan Stevens, who originally starred in ‘The Guest’ as a mysterious former soldier with a dangerous secret. Stevens now returns to this loosely connected world alongside Arjona, reinforcing the notion that Wingard is intentionally creating links across his body of work rather than starting anew with each project.
The film’s ensemble cast also features Alex Pereira, Michael Biehn, Drew Starkey, Eric Wareheim, and Reginald VelJohnson, rounding out what has been described as a gonzo action horror thriller centered around a desert showdown against an engineered military threat. Production took place in New Mexico, providing the film with its distinct sun-scorched, isolated backdrop.
With ‘Onslaught’ set to premiere in theaters on September 4, Arjona’s transition into full-scale action filmmaking is poised to be one of the most talked-about genre releases of the fall. Given the film’s connections to Wingard’s earlier cult favorite, fans of his previous work have ample reason to stay tuned.
