‘Fauda‘ has established itself over five seasons as one of Israeli television’s most recognized exports, delivering an intense undercover thriller that has put the nation’s TV industry on the global stage. Created by Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff, the series draws heavily from the real-life experiences of its creators, providing a uniquely personal perspective on the region’s conflicts.

This personal connection took on a new significance following the events of October 7, 2023. Raz and Issacharoff were both outside Israel during the Hamas attacks, with Raz quickly heading to the frontlines to assist in evacuating civilians alongside a rescue group, an experience that would ultimately reshape the show’s direction.

Season five, which was confirmed prior to the attacks, underwent significant rewrites in their aftermath. Raz stated that addressing October 7 and its repercussions directly within the show represents perhaps the most crucial work he and Issacharoff have ever undertaken, as he shared in an interview with the New York Times ahead of the season’s premiere.

The new season picks up two years after the attacks, following the team of fighters as they race against time to prevent a catastrophic attack on Israel, all while grappling with the trauma of their experiences. This narrative approach places the emotional fallout of October 7 at the forefront, rather than relegating it to mere background context.

With the Gaza war still ongoing during the season’s writing, the creative team made a conscious decision to steer the story away from Gaza itself, instead exploring locations across Europe, Israel, and other parts of the Middle East. Issacharoff explained that the aim was to remain as close to reality as possible while recognizing that some aspects are simply too difficult to portray on screen.

The production faced real tragedy during the season’s development. Team member Matan Meir was killed while serving in a counterterrorism operation in Gaza, and cast member Idan Amedi, who joined the IDF reserves after the attacks, was severely injured during combat operations. These events further influenced how the creators approached this chapter of the story.

Raz has expressed a desire for the season to achieve more than mere entertainment. He hopes viewers will connect with the characters on a deeper level and see the genuine emotions experienced during those challenging days, reflecting the creators’ personal investment in accurately portraying this story.

The season premieres amid a complex cultural landscape, coinciding with ongoing boycotts and public debates surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict. This context adds another layer of scrutiny to a series that has always aimed to portray the region’s complexities rather than offering simplistic narratives.

‘Fauda’ season five is set to stream globally on Netflix starting September 8, following its earlier premiere on Israel’s Yes network. With the creators describing this chapter as their most personally significant work to date, the new season carries weight far beyond being just another entry in the franchise.
