Marvel enthusiasts have long awaited this moment, and it’s finally here. Ryan Gosling took the stage at Hall H during San Diego Comic Con to confirm the long-speculated news: he is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider.

This announcement not only resolves a long-standing question about Gosling’s potential role but also prompts another inquiry for dedicated comic fans. With several characters having donned the flaming skull over the years, which version of ‘Ghost Rider’ will Gosling embody?

According to Deadline, Gosling will portray Johnny Blaze in Marvel’s upcoming ‘Ghost Rider’ film, set to release in 2028. This detail puts to rest any debate, as Blaze is the character most audiences associate with the franchise due to previous film adaptations.

The comic book origins of Blaze go back further than many casual fans might know. Created by writer Gary Friedrich and artist Mike Ploog, he first appeared in 1972’s Marvel Spotlight No. 5, before launching his own series a year later.

In the comics, Blaze is a stunt motorcycle driver who makes a pact with the devil, becoming bonded with a demon named Zatharos and transforming into the fiery, skull-headed Spirit of Vengeance.

It’s important to note that Blaze isn’t the only character to take on the ‘Ghost Rider’ mantle in Marvel comics. Other characters, such as Danny Ketch and Donnie Reyes, have held the title over the years, but Blaze remains the version most fans connect with.

The journey to this confirmation has been lengthy and played out in the public eye. Gosling first expressed his interest in playing ‘Ghost Rider’ back in 2022, while also dispelling rumors that Marvel was considering him for the character Nova instead.

Marvel Studios took notice of his early comments. Kevin Feige responded positively, expressing his enthusiasm for finding a role for Gosling in the MCU and praising his talent.

Recently, Gosling kept the speculation alive without giving a definitive answer. While promoting ‘Project Hail Mary’ on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he mentioned that discussions with Marvel had taken place, describing the situation as complicated but expressing hope.

This podcast moment played a significant role in how the Comic Con reveal unfolded. Host Josh Horowitz was brought into the panel, asking Feige about Gosling, which led to Gosling being introduced on stage.

In addition to the casting news, two other significant details emerged from the panel. Marvel confirmed that Gosling’s standalone ‘Ghost Rider’ film will simply be titled ‘Ghost Rider’ and is scheduled for 2028.

On the directing front, Gosling will collaborate with a familiar face. Shawn Levy, who has experience with Marvel from directing and producing ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, will helm the project.

The two have already established a rapport, as they are currently working together on ‘Star Wars Starfighter’. Levy shared that during their downtime on set, they often discussed ideas for ‘Ghost Rider’.

Levy’s enthusiasm for the project was evident during his onstage appearance. He mentioned that after spending time together on ‘Starfighter’, he was eager to support Gosling’s vision for the character, simply stating that they should ride. ‘Star Wars Starfighter’ is set to release on May 28, 2027, meaning Gosling has an exciting lineup of major franchise projects ahead of ‘Ghost Rider’.

Gosling is not the first actor to portray this character on screen. Nicolas Cage took on the role of the fiery motorcycle rider in two films for Sony, first in 2007’s ‘Ghost Rider’ and again in 2011’s ‘Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance’, with both films collectively grossing over 361 million dollars worldwide.

There’s also a personal connection to this casting that fans have noted. Eva Mendes, Gosling’s longtime partner, starred in the original 2007 film, and Gosling has humorously remarked that he is just glad one of them finally got to play the role.

The character has also appeared on television, with Gabriel Luna portraying the Robbie Reyes version of ‘Ghost Rider’ on ‘Agents of SHIELD’. Luna was initially set to reprise his role in a standalone Hulu series before the project was canceled in 2019. With Blaze now confirmed as the version heading to the big screen, fans are left wondering if Marvel will incorporate any of that television history into the broader mythology.

Which version of ‘Ghost Rider’ do you hope to see alongside Gosling’s Johnny Blaze when the film finally premieres in 2028?
