‘The Odyssey’ Breaks Box Office Records with Unprecedented Second Weekend Performance

Blockbusters often face a critical test during their second weekend. A film may debut with impressive numbers but can quickly lose momentum, prompting studios to prepare for significant drops once the initial audience disperses.

This is precisely why the recent performance of Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s work has surprised the industry. Few anticipated that a nearly three-hour, R-rated film would defy typical audience drop-off patterns, especially one based on a 2,700-year-old poem rather than a franchise sequel.

‘The Odyssey’ has achieved the smallest second weekend drop ever recorded for any film that opened above $100 million. The Matt Damon-led epic garnered an additional $87 million in its second weekend, marking a decline of only about 30 percent from its $123.5 million debut—an impressive retention rarely seen outside of awards contenders with smaller audiences.

For context, only a few massive openers have come close to this level of staying power. ‘Wicked’ experienced a 27.9 percent drop, while ‘Top Gun Maverick’ fell by 28.9 percent, both benefiting from holiday timing that enhanced their numbers. ‘The Odyssey’ now ranks just behind them, outperforming steeper declines from ‘Shrek 2’ at 33.2 percent and ‘Frozen 2’ at 34 percent.

The film has also set a new standard among July releases, surpassing the second weekend hold of ‘The Dark Knight’ and edging out ‘The Lion King.’ Given the skepticism surrounding its release due to its length, rating, and subject matter, this level of consistency indicates that word of mouth is playing a significant role.

Box office analyst David A. Gross, who publishes the industry newsletter FranchiseRe, highlighted how rare this phenomenon is. He noted that a film that opens big and continues to perform well for weeks is a rarity, stating, “The Odyssey is showing that kind of holding power,” he told Variety.

This holding power has propelled the film to $286.4 million domestically and $639.6 million globally after just two weekends in theaters. It reached this domestic milestone in only ten days, positioning it to cross $300 million soon, with projections of reaching $400 million by early August.

Part of the success can be attributed to the audience demographics. Approximately half of the opening weekend viewers were aged between 18 and 34, a demographic that box office analysts believe has contributed to the film’s sustained attendance well beyond its premiere. Nolan’s choice to film the entire movie using IMAX cameras has also made repeat viewings appealing, with fans returning specifically for the unique format.

Looking ahead, the key question is how ‘The Odyssey’ will perform when ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ hits theaters next weekend. Two of ‘The Odyssey’s stars, Tom Holland and Zendaya, lead that film, and the competition between the two will influence whether Nolan’s epic continues its ascent toward the $500 million mark or settles into a more gradual box office run.

Regardless, a three-hour R-rated Greek epic has outperformed nearly every $100 million opener in box office history in terms of audience retention.
