Marvel’s X-Men Cast Reveal Expected at D23 – Here’s When

Marvel Studios has been teasing the return of its beloved mutant heroes for years, and excitement peaked as this year’s San Diego Comic-Con approached. With Kevin Feige hinting that the X-Men would play a crucial role in the studio’s upcoming phase, fans were hopeful that casting details would finally be unveiled at the event.

However, that moment did not materialize. Despite rampant speculation, leaked meetings, and insider discussions naming various potential mutants, Marvel’s Hall H panel primarily focused on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and surprise announcements like Ryan Gosling’s casting as Ghost Rider, leaving the X-Men topic notably absent.

Now, a new report suggests that the reveal may have simply been postponed rather than canceled. Insider Daniel Richtman has indicated that Marvel plans to announce the cast of its upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot at D23, the Disney fan expo set for August 14 to 16 in Anaheim.

This timing aligns with growing speculation that Marvel intentionally withheld its major mutant news for a different platform. Rumors have been circulating for weeks that casting for the project, directed by Jake Schreier, is well underway, with names like Bill Skarsgard, Adam Driver, Tom Pelphrey, Charles Melton, and Margot Robbie all linked to various roles at different times.

Reports from scooper Apocalyptic Horseman at Nexus Point News have specifically claimed that the film will feature a lineup including Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, Storm, Professor X, and Magneto. However, none of these names have been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios, which has been cautious about allowing any speculation to overshadow its timeline.

Kevin Feige has worked to manage expectations leading up to Comic-Con, confirming that the mutants will be entirely recast for this new film instead of incorporating any actors currently appearing in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. This distinction is significant, especially since Doomsday features Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and Kelsey Grammer reprising their original Fox era X-Men roles one last time.

Feige has also directly addressed rumors, including the ongoing speculation linking Adam Driver to the reboot. He confirmed that Marvel has approached Driver multiple times over the years, but the actor has consistently declined, describing it as a running joke between them rather than a serious negotiation.

Beyond casting, Feige has framed the project as deeply personal, given that his first producing credit was on the original 2000 ‘X-Men’ film that helped launch the modern superhero genre. He has expressed that reintroducing these characters to a new generation is one of his long-held dreams finally coming to fruition.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to release this December and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following in 2027, the untitled ‘X-Men’ film is anticipated to kick off the next chapter of the franchise sometime in 2028. If Richtman’s report is accurate, D23 could provide Marvel with a controlled environment to finally confirm a cast that has been the subject of ongoing speculation for months.

For now, fans will have to wait and see if Disney’s convention becomes the platform where Marvel finally addresses the questions left unanswered at Comic-Con. Given how meticulously the studio has protected this reveal, there’s a strong possibility that the wait will be worthwhile.

Marvel’s untitled ‘X-Men’ film is expected to release sometime in 2028.
