Marvel Studios has been navigating a significant evaluation of its output in recent years, as both fans and critics have raised concerns about whether the extensive number of movies and shows has diluted the brand’s impact. This ongoing dialogue has accompanied Kevin Feige through numerous interviews, and this year’s Comic Con weekend provided him another platform to address these issues directly.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on the horizon as the next major installments in the franchise, Feige has openly discussed how Marvel has intentionally structured the timeline surrounding these films. Instead of cramming in smaller projects, the studio opted to allow both Avengers films to stand out on their own before the next wave of narratives begins.

Feige noted that this approach reflects a broader philosophy the studio has embraced for some time, focusing on prioritizing quality above all else. He explained that while Marvel has always aimed for high standards, an overwhelming quantity can lead to a dilution of quality, emphasizing the importance of maintaining integrity for the Avengers films within the overarching story, in an exclusive interview with Empire.

That comment aligns with the fact that there are currently no MCU releases scheduled between ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars,’ which is set to hit theaters next December. Feige framed this gap as a deliberate choice, explaining that ensuring both films are properly positioned, especially using ‘Secret Wars’ as a setup for future stories, warranted giving each project the space to shine without the clutter of additional content.

He also took the opportunity to look further ahead, confirming that Marvel has already announced two of its planned releases for 2028: Ghost Rider and ‘Black Panther 3.’ Feige added an intriguing note that these are just the projects revealed so far, hinting at the possibility of a third, yet-to-be-announced film for that year.

This speculation intensified after Ryan Gosling’s casting as Ghost Rider was confirmed on stage alongside director Shawn Levy. Levy shared that the collaboration emerged while filming ‘Starfighter,’ where Gosling began outlining his vision for the character until Levy committed to bringing the film to life.

This renewed focus on quality marks a significant shift from the pace Marvel maintained during the peak of Phase Four and Five, when multiple films and series were released within a single year. That era faced criticism for spreading storylines too thin across numerous projects, making it challenging for casual viewers to follow the overarching narrative.

By intentionally slowing down and allowing ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ to have this uninterrupted focus, Marvel seems to be banking on the idea that fewer, more thoughtfully crafted releases will resonate more with audiences than a crowded release schedule ever could. Given the anticipation surrounding both Avengers films, this strategy appears to be paying off.

As 2028 shapes up to be one of Marvel’s most closely monitored years, fans are left speculating about the surprises the studio may still have in store beyond Ghost Rider and ‘Black Panther 3.’ For now, Feige appears content to let that mystery build alongside Marvel’s future plans.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters this December, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ next December.
