Universal Takes Action After ‘The Odyssey’ Leaks to Millions on X

Christopher Nolan has always emphasized that his films should be experienced on the largest screen possible, and ‘The Odyssey’ was crafted entirely with that vision in mind. Filmed exclusively with IMAX cameras and heavily marketed as a theatrical event, this film marks the most expensive production of Nolan’s career, making it feel almost sacrilegious for anyone to watch it in any other format.

However, this carefully planned theatrical strategy faced a significant challenge this past weekend. Just two weeks after its release, ‘The Odyssey’ became the center of a major piracy issue when a high-quality bootleg of the film began circulating widely on social media.

The leak first emerged on X on Saturday at 2:25 p.m. Pacific time, with a post claiming that someone had uploaded the entire movie. This quickly went viral, amassing over 2.1 million views within just two and a half hours before a copyright takedown notice replaced the video, leading to the suspension of the responsible account. A second, lower-quality version appeared the next morning, gathering nearly 50,000 views before it too was removed about two hours later.

Universal responded promptly, confirming in a statement that they were aware of the unauthorized posting and had initiated takedown protocols immediately. The studio emphasized its commitment to addressing copyright infringement and will pursue all necessary measures to protect its content and intellectual property rights, as stated to The Hollywood Reporter.

Despite the studio’s quick action, the leak has proven challenging to contain fully. X has faced criticism from copyright holders for its slow response to infringement reports, and additional lower-quality copies of the pirated film reportedly continued to resurface on the platform even after the original uploads were taken down, often disguised behind misleading links that redirected viewers to unrelated content.

This isn’t the first instance of footage from the film appearing online without Universal’s consent. The movie’s original teaser, which debuted exclusively in theaters ahead of ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ in 2025, was also captured on mobile devices and spread across social media shortly after its theatrical release, reflecting a pattern Nolan has faced with past projects like ‘Tenet.’

The leak comes amid a separate wave of controversy surrounding the film, as Elon Musk publicly criticized some of its casting choices and claimed his own AI tool could create a more historically accurate version of the story. However, this criticism has not hindered the film’s box office success, with ‘The Odyssey’ continuing to lead ticket sales and surpassing $600 million worldwide during its second weekend in theaters.

For a film so meticulously designed for the theatrical experience, the widespread circulation of a full pirated copy represents a significant setback, even if it has yet to visibly impact its commercial performance. Studios typically anticipate some level of piracy risk with any major blockbuster release, but the speed and scale of this particular leak caught many by surprise, given how closely Nolan and Universal have historically guarded early footage.

With ongoing takedown efforts and the film still performing well at the box office, Universal seems focused on containing further spread rather than treating this as an isolated incident. The emergence of additional copies in the coming days will likely determine how seriously this piracy scare ultimately affects the film’s remaining theatrical run.

‘The Odyssey’ is currently playing in theaters worldwide.
