Nick Reiner Indicted on Murder Charges in Deaths of Parents Rob and Michele Reiner
The entertainment world was rocked last December when it was revealed that renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, had been discovered dead in their Brentwood residence. This shocking news sent ripples through Hollywood, leading to an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, political figures, and fans who admired Reiner’s extensive career.
Rob Reiner, the son of iconic comedian Carl Reiner, gained fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking sitcom ‘All in the Family’ before making a name for himself as a director of beloved films such as ‘This Is Spinal Tap,’ ‘Stand by Me,’ ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ and ‘A Few Good Men.’ Michele Reiner, a talented photographer and philanthropist, met Rob on the set of ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and went on to establish her own successful career behind the camera.
Now, several months after the couple’s tragic deaths, a Los Angeles County grand jury has officially indicted their son, Nick Reiner, on charges related to the killings. The indictment, which was returned on July 20 and unsealed Wednesday, charges the 32-year-old with two counts of murder, along with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait.
During his court appearance, Reiner pleaded not guilty to the indictment and remains in custody without bond. He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous weapon, specifically a knife, in the commission of the murders. His next court appearance is a pretrial hearing scheduled for September 15.
Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on December 14, with the county medical examiner later determining that their deaths resulted from multiple sharp force injuries. Nick Reiner was arrested just hours after the bodies were discovered and was initially charged with two counts of first-degree murder along with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders.
The newly unsealed grand jury indictment includes the lying-in-wait allegation, a legal strategy that allows prosecutors to bypass the public preliminary hearing that would typically be necessary to establish probable cause before a judge. This hearing was anticipated to occur sometime this fall before the indictment expedited the case towards trial.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman commented on the case, describing the murders as a deep betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very individuals he is accused of killing. He noted that the grand jury’s indictment brings the case closer to trial and to what his office refers to as justice.
Nick Reiner has previously spoken candidly about his battles with drug addiction and homelessness, co-writing the 2015 film ‘Being Charlie,’ which his father directed and was largely inspired by those experiences. Just months prior to the tragic events, the Reiner family had appeared together publicly at the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues.’
Details regarding the motivations behind the attack remain largely undisclosed, as prosecutors have not provided any public statements about a possible motive, and coverage of the case has noted a significant lack of leaks from either side. The Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office, which represents Reiner, has chosen not to comment on the recently unsealed indictment.
With a pretrial hearing now on the calendar for next month, the case is expected to progress towards trial in the upcoming months. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic situation as the legal proceedings unfold.
